A chicken egg is a universal product that housewives use to prepare various dishes. Some recipes require fresh raw eggs, for example, for baking, omelets, casseroles. In other cases, eggs should be boiled first, and then added to salads, soups or served as an independent snack. But it often happens that housewives cook eggs in advance. The blanks are placed in the refrigerator on the same shelf with raw products. And the next day they wonder – which of the testicles is needed? In this case, there are several ways to distinguish a boiled egg from a raw one. All methods are tested – try each one to evaluate their benefits!
Break
The first method is the simplest – you just need to break an egg. This is convenient if the product is intended to be used immediately in cooking. For example, you decided to bake pancakes, and you need a couple of raw eggs. Take them and break them with a fork or a knife, as is convenient. But, if you suddenly come across a cooked analogue, try to eat it in the near future. The shelf life of a broken boiled egg is less than that of one in its shell.
If you leave such a product on the table and eat it only the next day, it can cause poisoning. Take care of yourself and your loved ones – put boiled broken eggs in the refrigerator! Only this type of storage is acceptable.
Note! If you hate breaking an egg, try cleaning it. The cooked product is easy to clean, while removing the shell from the raw one will not work – it will crack.
Unwind
The next way to check for sure whether an egg is cooked or not is to spin the chicken product. It is important to follow some rules:
- Place the egg on a flat surface. As a rule, this is a table.
- Wrap it with your thumb on one side and all the other fingers on the other.
- Roll the egg.
- After a couple of seconds, sharply stop it with the pressure of the index finger.
- Analyze what happens to the egg.
If you don’t understand how to spin, watch the video!
Signs of a hard-boiled egg:
- stops immediately after pressing with a finger;
- spins like a spindle – quickly and evenly.
Signs of a raw product:
- rotates slowly;
- after a forced stop, it continues to rock for some time.
Why such differences? The fact is that a boiled egg is a complete object, and its center of gravity is one. Hence the fast rotation and easy stopping.
But it is difficult to spin a raw egg due to the fact that the liquid fills the entire internal space. The center of gravity is not defined, which is why it will rotate so slowly. The laws of mechanics will help you understand how to characterize the results of rotation.
shake
The third method often used by housewives is shaking eggs. You need to take the product, preferably bring it to your ear and shake it. If the liquid inside oscillates freely, then the yolk is raw.
And here are the indicators that the protein and yolk are cooked:
- when shaking, nothing falls behind the walls of the egg;
- there is no characteristic dull gurgling;
- the weight of the product is felt.
Pay attention to such details, and you will easily distinguish a boiled egg from a raw one. In addition, this method will help you find out whether the egg is fresh or the raw product is already rotten.
Importantly! When shaking a raw egg, the liquid inside should not move too freely inside. Otherwise, it indicates that the embryo has separated from the walls, therefore, died.
Enlighten
If the previous methods are not enough for your confidence, then check the chicken egg for light. For this you can use:
- natural sunlight (in summer, the first half of the day);
- artificial lighting (table or hanging lamps);
- improvised lighting devices (flashlight).
Experienced housewives advise checking eggs with a flashlight. So you will definitely get an answer to the question whether it is boiled hard, not hard or still raw.
How to test an egg for light:
- Turn off the light.
- Turn on the flashlight.
- Attach it to the shell.
- Evaluate the result: light will pass through a raw egg, while a cooked yolk will not let light through due to its density.
Note! You can illuminate the egg under a table lamp or in the light from a window. But the lighting power may not be enough, so it is better to use a flashlight.
Put in hot water
And finally, the last method of verification. Before boiling the eggs, put them in a container of hot water. The temperature should be 100 degrees Celsius. It is better if the water is boiling, that is, it is optimal to lower the products into a mug or pan that is on an electric or gas stove. You can also pour water from a kettle that has just boiled. As soon as you place the egg in the water, see if small bubbles appear on its surface. Don’t hold the egg too long, 10-15 seconds is enough!
A condition for the appearance of bubbles is a raw product. Its shell is pierced with many pores. They are necessary so that the embryo of the chicken can breathe. As soon as you lower the product into boiling water, gas comes out of its air chamber. As a result, bubbles are formed. If the egg is boiled, you will not see bubbles. All the air has already left the chamber during the pre-brewing process.
We hope these egg checking tips help you in the kitchen! Also remember a few more tricks:
- mark raw and boiled eggs with a marker – you can put the letter C or B;
- color the eggs when cooking with the shell or food dyes;
- store raw and cooked foods in different containers or on different shelves.
Good luck in preparing delicious and healthy dishes!
