The undoubted advantage of the non-stick coating is that nothing sticks on such pans. Of course, provided that you use them correctly, i.e. observe the temperature regime, do not leave them dirty and do not wash them with abrasive products and hard brushes. In this article, we will consider how to properly wash and how to clean a pan with a non-stick coating, if food still burns on it. Non- stick pans and dishes should be cleaned carefully so that the coating is not damaged, otherwise it will be irreversibly damaged.
Cleaning rules
For ordinary cleaning, only dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge are used. It is strictly forbidden to scratch the non-stick coating (a layer of soot will form at the place of scratches). You need to clean the pan immediately after cooking, do not allow the remaining fat and food crumbs to dry on the surface. So, they prepared, removed the food, waited a couple of minutes for the pan to cool down, and washed it with a soft washcloth with a small addition of detergent (you can do without it).

If you left the Teflon pan dirty for a long time, or you overheated it before cooking, the food can burn and start a fire or dry out, forming a crust that cannot be washed off simply with a sponge. Take your time and don’t make any effort. Just pour warm water into it and wait until the remains of burnt products are soaked by themselves. After 10-15 minutes, everything will be easy to clean with a sponge. To prevent burning next time, before cooking, add a little vegetable oil to the heated pan, which will create a thin protective film for the future.
If the warm water did not help to soak the burned, then it will be a little more difficult to clean. Use any special detergent – liquid for dishes or specialized from the manufacturer of the pan. The procedure is as follows:
- lightly wipe the cover of the pan with a paper towel to remove the remains of fat and food;
- apply a generous layer of dishwashing liquid to the walls and bottom and pour warm water almost to the edges;
- put on the fire and bring the water with the detergent to a boil;
- turn off the stove and let it cool so that the water becomes barely warm;
- wash thoroughly with a soft sponge;
- rinse several times with cool water to remove the smell of dishwashing detergent – the non-stick coating absorbs odors well (to remove the smell of the washing liquid, you can also rinse with cool water with a small amount of apple bite).
Unlike steel and cast iron, non-stick cookware can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher without much effort or special means. It is enough to wash a burnt non-stick pan with everyday detergent in the usual way.
Cleaning with simple household products
If the pan is badly burned and there is no dishwashing liquid, household products that are in almost every home will help.
- Cleaning with citric acid, table vinegar and baking soda: rinse dirty dishes with warm water, sprinkle the inner surface with citric acid powder, sprinkle with vinegar, leave for 10 minutes. Then pour warm water, put it on the stove with a small fire, heat it to a hot state and, without letting it boil, remove it from the stove. Drain the dirty water and clean it under warm running water using soda.
- Pour baking soda into a freshly burnt (still hot) pan with a non-stick coating and pour hot water (the soda solution should be very strong). Boil the soda solution for 10 minutes, drain the dirty water. Clean with warm water and normal detergent.
- Any toothpaste will help to effectively clean a pan with a Teflon coating : apply the paste liberally to the burnt areas and leave it for 12-15 hours. Then wash with dishwashing liquid.
- Cleaning with mustard powder: cover the wet walls and the bottom of a hot, dirty pan with a non-stick coating with dry mustard, pour a small amount of water on the bottom and let it soak for 2-2.5 hours – the heat will come off easily.
- If the pan is burnt to black, you will need baking soda and a piece of laundry soap. Prepare a solution from 3 liters of warm water and 130 g of soda. Rub soap on a medium grater and dissolve in water in a soda solution. Pour the mixture into a deep dish (larger in diameter than the pan), bring to a boil. Place the burnt pan in a vessel with boiling soap solution, boil on low heat for 10 minutes, then turn off the heat and leave to soak for 3 hours. After that, clean in the usual way.

Because of
It is very difficult to get something to burn on the Teflon coating, but it is possible if you use it incorrectly. It should be understood that such dishes are different from the usual ones, so you need to take care of them differently. The most amazing thing is that maintenance is much easier than in the case of cast iron or aluminum pans. You just need to do everything on time and with the right things:
- Do not use metal objects for cooking, they can scratch the coating. Buy kitchen tools made of wood or silicone.
- Do not use abrasive compositions and hard or metal sponges. With a soft enough washcloth, and when washing with hot enough water, you can do without dishwashing detergent (economy!!!)
- Wash non-stick cookware immediately after cooking. Do not allow situations where the pan is standing around the clock and waiting for hands to reach it. It is as easy to wash as plates, this is not a cast iron with many years of soot that needs to be dried for half an hour.
