Over time, household dust settles on the curtains, they burn out under the influence of the sun’s rays. As a result, the snow-white tissue becomes pale, gray or yellowish. With proper perseverance, a beautiful appearance can be returned even to a “killed” thing. Therefore, we will consider how to whiten curtains, what means to use and what to pay attention to.

Important: it is easier to maintain the whiteness of the curtains than to whiten them later, while removing dirt at the same time. Don’t forget to wash your curtains and tulle regularly!

How to whiten curtains

How to wash

Before the main washing of the curtains, it is necessary to shake them out on the street, on the balcony, or simply gently walk over the curtains with a vacuum cleaner brush to remove dust accumulations that have not had time to settle. In the latter case, pre-fix a small light and dry cloth with a rubber band or tape on the “nozzle” tube – this will help to avoid snags.

Remove metal hooks, weights and decorations so as not to leave rusty spots on the fabric.

Detergents for regular washing with whitening effect:

  • Powder for washing white clothes.
  • Soap for dissolving stains (usually these have a brightening effect at the same time).

It is better to wash by hand:

  • It is not necessary to dissolve the soap in water: it is enough to rub the moistened cloth well with a bar, and then crumple it well, immersing it in water. If you use a powder, then thoroughly dilute it in water so that there are no undissolved granules.
  • Soak for 30 minutes in warm soapy water with the addition of baking soda to wash off dirt. Four tablespoons of soda are enough for ten liters of water. Such soaking will help to wash and whiten the curtain more easily.
  • After washing, rinse in warm water until the detergent is completely washed out.

If washed in a washing machine:

  • Use a laundry bag to avoid damaging the curtain fabric. The tulle can catch on the drum or other things and tear.
  • Washing mode – delicate, temperature – up to 40 degrees, revolutions – up to 500. Be sure to turn on double rinsing. Disable automatic drying.

After washing, you can immediately hang the curtain in its place, especially if it is long. So the curtain will dry evenly, without creases.

If necessary, iron, only slightly damp or through a damp cotton cloth.

What to use for lighting?

If the curtain has become very gray, and ordinary washing does not help to whiten it, then it is time to apply more radical methods:

  • Powder bleach. Choose the most suitable for you in the store, and wash the curtain according to the instructions. The most effective and safe for tissue are the means enriched with oxygen.
  • Salt. A teaspoon of powder is needed per liter of water. Keep the fabric in the solution for 40 minutes. Do not use for curtains with colored elements. After, be sure to rinse the product thoroughly.
  • Mangantsivka Prepare the solution in a separate container to prevent the crystals from getting on the fabric – it cannot be removed by any other means. The pink liquid will dissolve traces of grease and dirt well in 15 minutes. To whiten the curtain well, it is enough to use slightly pinkish water – a more concentrated and long-lasting “bath” can give the white thing a beige cast.
  • Boiling. This is the most time-consuming method, if you take into account that the curtains often have a solid size. However, the most persistent greasy stains and soot are exposed to the influence of boiling water with soap or powder.

All brighteners should be used alternately or selectively. It is not worth combining substances for one soak, as they can neutralize each other’s effects. A few more tips on bleaching tulle can be found in this article .

How to whiten curtains

To enhance the attractiveness of the white curtain, it can be rinsed in tinted water for the last time. Most often, for this, an ordinary blue is chosen: only 1/2 tsp is needed for 10 liters of water. liquid concentrate.

A pleasant shade can be achieved with the help of pharmacy green tea: you need no more than 10 drops per basin of water. Nuance: the drug must first be diluted in a glass of water, and the resulting solution poured into a container for washing through a filter – a cut of a bandage folded in several layers is enough. As in the case of a bruise, the fabric will be well colored after a quarter of an hour. Additional rinsing is not required.

Importantly

Take into account a number of nuances that will complicate the care of curtains:

  • Gel for washing dishes. Expecting to clean the curtain from greasy traces sooner, inexperienced housewives add too much detergent to the water for soaking or washing. As a result, it takes much more water and time to rinse things.
  • Bleach with chlorine. It is able not only to whiten, but also to eat holes in silk curtains and give an unwanted shade to synthetic ones. In addition, a specific “hospital” smell will emanate from the tulle for a long time.
  • Undissolved colored grains from washing powder. They can tint the fabric during soaking in water with poorly dissolved powder.
  • Placing it crumpled in the washing machine drum will leave creases that are difficult to remove even with a modern iron.
  • Home-made starching agent. If not rinsed enough, the starch will remain and may turn yellow under the iron during ironing.
