Membrane fabric appeared relatively recently. Not only ski and sports suits are made from it, but also everyday, work clothes. It has become especially popular for sewing children’s winter overalls, as it allows you to reduce the weight of the product, which, together with a light insulation, makes the overalls simply weightless. The prevalence of the material naturally raises the question of how to wash the membrane.
Despite all this, there is still an opinion that it is strictly forbidden to wash the membrane. This statement is explained by the fact that the first models of membrane clothes were really not recommended to be wet, as this could deteriorate the quality of the product. But since then, technology has taken a step forward, such prohibitions no longer exist. On the contrary, manufacturers strongly advise to understand how to wash the membrane and to do it regularly. Especially if it concerns ski suits, the washing of which is described here.

Why is it so important to wash the membrane? The so-called “breathable” properties of matter are provided due to its porosity. During wear, the pores become clogged with dirt, which reduces the quality of the product. Also, a person sweats, which creates an aggressive environment, which, when interacting with the membrane, leads to the destruction of its structure. It’s even worse when it comes to membrane children’s overalls, because children like to find where it’s dirtier. As a result, without washing, membrane clothing will deteriorate quickly. But not every wash is suitable here.
What to wash?
If you buy a membrane jacket, be sure to immediately buy means for washing the membrane. If there is none, you can use a liquid mild detergent or soap.
Soap can also be used to remove stains. Special products may not be able to cope, as they suggest delicate washing. If the dirty spot is not washed, then rub it with soap and rinse.
Prohibitions
Before washing a jacket with a membrane, learn how not to do it:
- It is strictly forbidden to wash the membrane with powder or other crystalline means. Undissolved crystals can clog the pores of the fabric. As a result, it will eventually deteriorate.
- Washing products with a membrane with chlorine is contraindicated. Chlorine actually perforates the membrane tissue, i.e. increases the number of pores. This form is more “breathable”, but at the same time other properties (water repellent, windproof) come to “no”.
- No aggressive detergents, rinses, conditioners. They destroy the structure of the membrane.
- The membrane does not tolerate high temperatures well. This can cause the pores to stick together. Therefore, it is contraindicated to wash it at a temperature above 40 degrees, it is forbidden to iron it and dry it near heating devices.
- Do not twist or squeeze. If you wash in a washing machine, turn off the spin cycle, and if you wash by hand, you need to let the water drain on its own by hanging the clothes over the bathtub. Twisting can lead to mini tears and stretching of the fabric.

Washing clothes with a membrane: step by step
Now it remains to choose how to wash: by hand or in a washing machine. To choose, look at the garment tag, it will indicate the basic care requirements.
How to wash the membrane by hand:
- Take a third of the bath with warm water (up to 40 degrees). Dilute the shampoo for washing the membrane, following the instructions on the jar.
- Immerse the jacket in water, press to soak. Using a soft washcloth, rub the contaminated areas. Do not think too hard, otherwise you will spoil the fabric.
- Rinse under the shower or tap.
- Hold it on a scale to drain, then wrap the jacket in a terry towel.
- Straighten the clothes, straightening all the folds with your hands, leave to dry horizontally away from heating devices. Also, avoid direct sunlight, otherwise burnt spots will appear on the fabric that cannot be removed.
Washing a jacket with a membrane in a washing machine is even easier:
- The mode is “delicate”.
- The temperature is 30-40 degrees.
- Spinning, drying – turn off.
- Pour in the detergent.
- Fasten all buttons and zippers on the jacket and overalls. You can additionally put clothes in a laundry bag.
- After washing, wrap with a terry towel, spread out and put to dry.
After washing, the membrane must be treated with a special impregnation.
Impregnation can be liquid or in the form of an aerosol. The liquid impregnation is diluted in water, according to the instructions, and clothes are dipped in the resulting solution for some time. Aerosol is easier to use – just spray it on a cloth.
