The fur collar warms and gives the product an elegant look. But, no matter how carefully a thing is worn, it has to be washed from time to time. It is easiest to use dry cleaning services, but this pleasure is not cheap. Let’s figure out how to wash a fur collar from a down jacket and jacket yourself at home.
How to prepare for washing
- The removable collar must be unfastened.
- You need to know what type of fur you are going to wash – natural or artificial. If you don’t know for sure, spread the hairs and look at the base. In natural fur, it will be leather, in artificial – fabric.
- See if there is any information about the washing method on the product label.
- Shake the pile from dust, carefully clean it with a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle – “brush”.

Natural fur: cleaning methods
Machine washing is contraindicated.
Before cleaning by hand, check the fur for strength. Mix 1-2 drops of detergent, 2 drops of ammonia, 50 ml of water. Drip a few drops of the solution on the base. When the liquid is absorbed, gently pull the base, if the skin is not deformed, you can wash the collar.
Wet wash:
- Take shampoo for bathing animals or special products for fur or wool products.
- Soak a little shampoo in water.
- Wet the pile and carefully rinse with water with a temperature not higher than 40 degrees.
- It is impossible to wring out the fur, hold it on a scale to drain the water.
- Spread the collar to dry on a towel. When it dries, comb it, first against the pile, then along the pile.
Folk methods of cleaning fur products:
- Mix 1 tsp. peroxide, 2 drops of ammonia and 1 tbsp. water Spray the composition on the pile with a sprayer and put it to dry, but not in direct sunlight and not near heaters.
- Apply a small amount of semolina or potato starch on the collar, rub the cereal with gentle movements, shake, comb. This method is suitable for cleaning mink.
- Dip a sponge in high-purity gasoline, run it over the pile, then wipe it with a clean cloth. Gasoline removes greasy dirt well. The same effect has a solution where water, alcohol and vinegar essence must be mixed in equal proportions.
- To remove greasy stains, mix 1 teaspoon of ammonia, 3 teaspoons of salt and 1 liter of water.
- A little clean dry sand should be heated in a pan, poured onto the pile, and carefully rubbed. Repeat 3-4 times. This method is well suited for fox and beaver products.
You can wipe the fox collar with a sponge dipped in vinegar.
A rabbit collar is cleaned with lemon juice.
Rabbit and scribble collars can be cleaned using bran. They should be warmed up a little, poured onto the pile, after half an hour removed using a brush, then shaken and combed.

Artificial fur: cleaning methods
The above methods for washing natural fur are also suitable for cleaning fur from textile raw materials. In addition, you can wash the artificial fur collar in a washing machine with the “delicate wash” function, turning off the spin and drying modes.
Washing in the washing machine:
- The water temperature should not exceed 40 degrees.
- Use powder or gel for delicate fabrics.
- When the machine finishes washing, pour a little vinegar into clean water, apply it to the collar, then rinse with running water.
- Put the thing on a clean towel, dry it, comb it.
- In no case should you machine wash collars with long pile. The pile will get tangled, twisted, and all that remains is to cut it off or throw it away.
For hand washing, dilute the powder or gel in warm water. The detergent granules must dissolve completely, otherwise it will be difficult to wash them off the pile. Soak the fur for half an hour, carefully wash with a brush, rinse.
Tips
The fur collar must dry on its own, you cannot place it next to batteries, heating devices.
It is forbidden to crumple, rub, or twist fur clothes when washing them.
When drying, give the collar its natural shape.
In conclusion, it should be said that if the collar you want to wash is made of very expensive fur or is heavily soiled, it is better not to risk it, give it to dry cleaning.
