Blinds are a good and practical way to protect yourself from the sun’s rays and at the same time decorate the interior. Every owner of this type of curtains knows that over time a layer of dust forms on them. To keep them clean and tidy, they need to be washed periodically. And then the question arises: how to wash blinds quickly? It is important to do it correctly, because due to different designs and materials, some are washed with water, while others are vacuumed and wiped. Knowing a few simple rules, washing them will not be a difficult task for you.
The main types of blinds
There are two types of blinds according to their design:
- vertical;
- horizontal
At the same time, they can differ in the material from which they are made. According to the type of material, they are:
- plastic;
- wooden;
- fabric;
- bamboo;
- aluminum
For different types of curtains, you will have to choose the most effective cleaning method and detergent. Therefore, before washing the blinds, make sure that the chosen method is suitable for you.
Methods of washing blinds
There are two main cleaning methods for all such curtains.
Wash the blinds in the bathroom
The first way is to take them off and wash them in the bathroom. This method is used when the blinds are heavily soiled.
For vertical blinds:
- To begin with, you should clean them of dust with special means for dry pollution, and then take them to the bath.
- It is important to know that you should not use a washing machine, as this will affect the quality of the blinds themselves, and also not to use too hot water.
- You need to soak them in warm water using a good washing powder, do not twist or bend them.
- Wait about 10-15 minutes and wash each strip with a soft brush.
- After that, dry well without wringing, and attach to the profile.
- Weights can be attached to align the elements.
If you do not know how to wash horizontal blinds, then follow this procedure:
- Due to their location, such curtains accumulate more dust on themselves. Before washing, it is necessary to remove and wipe them with an ordinary cloth from its accumulations;
- Next, you should move the blinds to the “closed” position and use a shower to wash them with warm water, simultaneously wiping with a sponge;
- After washing, carefully wipe each lamella with a dry napkin and attach it to its place.
If the contamination is strong, you can use detergents for washing. Since it is quite easy to wash horizontal blinds, it will not take much time:
- They should be rolled up and soaked for a few minutes;
- After that, wash all contaminated areas with a sponge and rinse thoroughly;
- Next, let them dry so that the lamellas do not stick together, and hang them in an open position for complete drying.
Wash blinds directly on the window
This method is the most convenient, as it is much easier to quickly wash the blinds without removing them from the window, and even an inexperienced housewife can handle it.
Let’s figure out how to wash vertical blinds:
- Dust does not stick to these structures because they are impregnated with a special composition. Therefore, the simplest cleaning method will be a vacuum cleaner;
- After that, it is enough to wipe the stripes with a damp cloth, and the cleaning will be finished.
How to wash horizontal blinds without removing them:
- To begin with, you need to wipe each lamella with a dry cloth to remove dust;
- Then wipe behind the closed blinds with a napkin to clean the monitors.
This method is fast in terms of time, and there will be no separation on the slats. You can also use ordinary napkins moistened with water, but to avoid separation, you should immediately wipe the surface with a dry cloth.
If the pollution is more serious than ordinary dust, for example, greasy stains, then a dishwashing detergent is suitable. You can dilute it in water and wipe all the lamellas with a soft cloth, then wipe thoroughly and dry.
How to wash blinds made of different materials
Since how to properly wash blinds is our main task, let’s try to figure out which cleaning method is most suitable for different materials from which blinds can be made:
- Plastic blinds, which are most often used in the kitchen, should be washed immediately with a soapy solution. Since washing blinds in the kitchen is quite problematic due to the accumulation of fat and even soot, before washing they should be cleaned of large accumulations of dirt.
- Wooden slats and elements can never be washed with alkaline agents and under running water. For this, it is better to use a cloth soaked in a soapy solution and wrung out: run it over the dirty places, and then wipe them dry. It is recommended to use polishing and antistatic agents for this type of blinds.
- Fabric blinds are cleaned using a vacuum cleaner and a damp soapy sponge. In the case of severe pollution (greasy stains), it will not work to clean them without removing the structure from the window. The blinds will have to be disassembled, the fabric removed from them, then soaked in a weak solution of washing powder and washed under running water. The fabric dries naturally.
- Bamboo curtains cannot be washed under running water. To clean them, it is recommended to use a vacuum cleaner and a wet brush. You need to dry them in the sun.
- Aluminum blinds can be washed without noticeable deformation of the stripes, we advise you to take your time in this matter. Do not use powders and sponges with abrasive particles, as well as alkaline agents. Aluminum lamellas should also be protected from the accumulation of salts from water.
In addition, there are several basic rules that should be followed for any type of curtains and materials:
- Ensure that the detergents used do not contain a large amount of alkali;
- Do not allow water to enter the upper profile;
- Try not to allow too much pollution, and from time to time clean the blinds from dust and remove stains as they appear.
Following these recommendations, you can easily and quickly clean windows with blinds.
