Terry towels are always pleasant to use after a bath or shower due to their incredible fluffiness and softness. However, over time, bath textiles become hard and unpleasant to the body. Before sending the towels to the trash can, try to soften them yourself with the help of store-bought or improvised means. It’s much easier to do than you think. As a rule, it is enough to add only one ingredient during washing, which will soften water and textiles. Let’s analyze all the ways to make terry towels soft and fluffy after washing, as well as what else can affect the stiffness of textiles.

Why do towels become hard after washing

In order not to deal with the restoration of softness later, you should pay attention to washing new towels and understand why they become hard later.

The main causes of hardness are cheap washing powder and hard water. Also, the softness of textiles is affected by an incorrectly set washing temperature that does not correspond to the type of fabric, inappropriate ironing and drying.

In order not to look for means to restore softness to towels in the future, always choose high-quality washing powders, set the correct temperature regime for processing, soften the water with the help of improvised or purchased substances.

  • Water quality. One of the most important criteria for effective washing is water quality. Tap water contains additional impurities in the composition, which settle on the fibers of the material, thereby making the towels rough and hard. To eliminate this point, monitor the softness of the washing water and, if necessary, use special cleaners and softeners.
  • Detergent. If the low-quality powder is poorly rinsed from the fibers, after drying the material will definitely become rough and hard. To restore the original appearance, softness and fluffiness of towels, after washing, soak the textile in a large amount of water for 7-8 hours. After that, rinse the towels under running water and leave to dry. After this treatment, the powder will be rinsed off, and the fibers of the material will soften and be more pleasant to the body.

How to determine water hardness

It is a well-known fact that the quality of water differs in different regions and cities. In order to later understand how much fabric softener to use, you need to know how hard the water in your water supply is. Water hardness can be determined in several ways: with the help of tea leaves or ordinary soap.

  • With the help of tea. A good quality loose leaf tea will help you find out if the water is hard or not. Brew a small amount of aromatic leaves. If the brew is light and bright, it means the water is good, and if it is cloudy and dark, it is very hard.
  • With the help of soap. You can check the quality of water using soap in 2 ways. Grate the soap and dissolve in water. If the soap has completely dissolved, then the water is soft, and if there are many soap “flakes” left, it is hard. The second option: wash your hands with soap. If the soap foams well and quickly – the water is soft, if it practically does not lather – it means that it is too hard.

As you can not wash

First of all, it is worth determining how terry towels should not be treated. It is not recommended to wash them:

  • in hard water;
  • in an inappropriate temperature regime;
  • using cheap powders;
  • together with other things.

Housewives are often interested in whether it is possible to wash towels together with bed linen. In this matter, the type and color of the material is of key importance. If the textile is sewn from the same type of fabric and does not have bright or dark colors on the surface, it is permissible to wash it together. Otherwise, if, for example, towels are made of terry cloth, and bed linen is made of cotton or linen, washing the products in the same mode can lead to an unfavorable result.

How to wash towels to keep them soft

Many factors affect the softness of bath textile fibers. Adherence to the recommendations and rules for processing terry products will help to significantly improve their quality.

We look at the tag. Always read the information on the label before washing textiles. This will protect your towels from the negative impact of processing modes that are not suitable for this type of fabric. Usually, the label indicates the recommended cleaning mode (dry, wet, delicate), the appropriate temperature, especially ironing and drying.

Soaking. To preserve the softness of the fibers of bath textiles, soak them before washing. Choose a suitable product and leave the towels in the water for a certain time.

For example, we offer three options:

  • dissolve table salt in water at the rate of 1 tbsp. spoon per 1 liter of liquid, and leave the product overnight in the solution;
  • add 100 g of soda to the water for soaking and immerse the towels in the liquid for 12 hours;
  • use household soap or washing powder, dissolving the substance in water and leaving the textile in the liquid for 10-12 hours.

After soaking, lock heavy dirt and stains, and only then send to the drum.

Selection of temperature mode . Choose the washing temperature mode based on the information on the tag or the characteristics of the material. For example, light cotton and linen items can be washed at a temperature of 70-95 degrees. For mixed and colored materials, washing in warm water with a temperature of 40 to 60 degrees is suitable.

Features of machine washing . So that the result of washing in an automatic machine pleases:

  • Before sending the towel to the drum of the washing machine, try to remove stubborn dirt and stains. To do this, you can use store-bought stain removers or improvised means.
  • Pre-sort the towels into light and colored ones.
  • Fill the drum no more than 2/3 full.
  • Determine the hardness of the water and, if necessary, use softeners.
  • Wash towels separately from other items, especially products with sharp elements.
  • Set the appropriate washing temperature mode.
  • Use the additional rinse program.
  • Use push-ups at a maximum of 600 revolutions per minute.
  • Do not leave items in the drum after washing.
  • Dry properly.

Push-ups . If you wash terry towels in a washing machine, set the spin mode at a low speed – a maximum of 600 per minute. If you exceed this indicator, you can damage the fibers. When washing by hand, try not to wring out the towels, but simply squeeze out excess water

Hand washing . You can restore the softness of terry towels by re-washing them by hand. In order for the procedure to be effective, follow the following rules:

  1. Pre-soak the products in cold water.
  2. Drain the cold water, and fill the container with warm water.
  3. Add detergent or laundry soap to the liquid.
  4. Foam the composition, and leave the towels for 30 minutes.
  5. Carefully wash the textiles, excluding strong mechanical movements and friction.
  6. After washing, rinse towels in water with diluted vinegar.
  7. Gently squeeze, but do not twist.
  8. After processing, dry the towels properly.

How to soften towels at home

Use improvised substances to soften towels and water used for washing. Such tools are inexpensive, but give quite a good result.

Liquid detergents . Use only liquid or gel detergents for soaking and washing. These substances dissolve better in water, retain their effectiveness even at low temperatures and are well rinsed from the fibers.

Household soap . The substance will help restore freshness and softness to products. Lightly dampen a towel and rub thoroughly with laundry soap. Wrap the textile in polyethylene and leave it overnight. In the morning, take the towels out of the bag and wash them in the usual way. To remove soap particles from the material to the maximum, do not forget to set the additional rinse mode on the machine.

Soda . You can use either baking soda or baking soda. Just add a little detergent to the drum before washing. This will help to soften the water to a great extent.

Salt . “Extra” salt will be the most suitable for the textile softening procedure, as it dissolves in water faster. Sea salt also softens the fibers well. Add some salt to the machine tray with the washing powder or directly into the laundry drum. You can pre-dilute the substance in water and add it to the detergent tray.

Mustard . The main rule is to use only dry mustard, as the finished product contains many preservatives and other components that can harm the material. Mix mustard powder with water until you get a mushy substance. After washing, do not send the towels to dry, but treat them with the resulting mixture, paying special attention to persistent stains. Leave the textile overnight and then wash again.

Citric acid . Just one bag of citric acid will help to deal with old stains of vegetable origin. To remove dirt, wet the problem areas of the fabric with warm water and soap with laundry soap. Sprinkle the treated areas liberally with citric acid and hold for 5-10 minutes. Thoroughly rinse the products under running water and, if necessary, wash.

Soda and vinegar. Substances that every housewife has in the kitchen will help to soften the towels. Simply add 100ml of vinegar to the conditioner compartment and pour the baking soda directly into the laundry drum. From the same substances, you can prepare a homemade rinse. To do this, mix vinegar, soda and water in a separate container. After the reaction has passed, add a little more water and a few drops of any essential oil to the solution for a pleasant smell. Pour the liquid into a suitable bottle and use as a rinse aid with each wash.

Vinegar can also be used in its pure form to soften water by adding about half a glass of 9% acetic acid per wash.

Salt and ammonia. Use this mixture immediately after washing. Dissolve 1 tbsp in 2 liters of cold water. spoon of ammonia and 2 tbsp. spoons of salt. Leave in the solution for 2 hours, then rinse thoroughly and dry.

Glycerin and ammonia . You can use the substances both to remove stubborn stains and as detergent boosters. To prepare a home remedy for removing stains, mix ammonia with glycerin in proportions of 1:4. Apply the cleaning composition to the stains and leave for an hour. After the exposure time, send the textile to wash. To increase the effectiveness of the detergent, mix the substances in equal proportions and add to the water for soaking. Leave the textile in the warehouse for 60 minutes, and then wash in the usual way.

Massage ball for shaggy hair . Special massager balls for shaggy hair preserve the texture of the fibers well. Just put 2-3 balls in the drum before the procedure and start the wash cycle. When you get the laundry from the drum after washing, you will be pleasantly surprised, because the fibers will remain soft and fluffy. You can replace the special balls for shaggy with ordinary balls for table tennis.

Conditioner with silicone . It is worth noting that when using classic air conditioners, terry towels do not get better, because the components that make up the substances dry the fabric fibers. To make the towels soft, use only conditioners for children’s underwear or substances containing silicone. The main thing is not to overdo it with the latter, otherwise the textile may lose its ability to absorb moisture.

Cold water + snow . Such treatment is suitable for residents of private houses in the winter. At the first stage, soak and wash the towels in ice water. After that, collect clean snow in a container and place towels in it. Leave the textile in the snow for 2 hours, then rinse thoroughly. It is believed that snow significantly cleans and softens textile fibers.

How to whiten washed and gray terry towels

If standard washing did not help to remove all stains and dirt from bath textiles, use more radical cleaning methods.

Over time, light bath textiles can turn yellow or gray. To return the towels to their former appearance, use boiling, following the following algorithm of actions:

  1. Dissolve a shaving of laundry soap and a little baking soda in 5 liters of water.
  2. Put the mixture to warm on the stove.
  3. Dip pre-washed towels into the liquid.
  4. Bring the water to a boil and boil the towels over low heat for 20 minutes.
  5. Rinse the textile thoroughly under running water.

Please note that the procedure is recommended to be used only in the most extreme cases, as boiling makes the fibers of the terry cloth thinner.

Use of bleaches and conditioners

Increase the softness of the fibers and eliminate persistent pollution in forces and store household chemicals. Use special conditioners for bath textiles when rinsing, adding the agent to the appropriate tray of the washing machine or during the last rinse when washing by hand.

The active components of oxygen bleaches will help restore the purity of light textiles. Use these products only according to the dosage indicated in the instructions on the package according to the following algorithm:

  1. Fill the soaking container with hot water.
  2. Add bleach in the required dosage.
  3. Leave the towels in the cleaning solution for 2-3 hours.
  4. Rinse the textile thoroughly and leave to dry.

Please note that it is not recommended to use those containing chlorine, as they thin the fibers of the terry cloth.

Tools at hand

The following improvised means are suitable for removing stains from terry towels:

Mangantsivka . Experienced housewives know that in combination with household soap, potassium permanganate becomes an effective bleach. You will need a two-hundred-gram bar of laundry soap and enough crystals of potassium permanganate so that the water becomes bright pink after dilution. Pre-dilute each substance in water in separate containers. After the substances are completely dissolved, mix the liquids in one container. Immerse the towels in the composition and leave for 6 hours. Be sure to rinse after processing.

Hydrogen peroxide . Hydrogen peroxide will help to put white towels in order quite quickly. You will also need some ammonia to prepare the remedy. Processing scheme:

  1. Prepare a cleaning solution from 5 liters of water, 50 ml of peroxide and 15 ml of ammonia.
  2. Pour the solution into a pan and put it on the stove.
  3. Immerse the towels in the container, bring to a boil and cook for 30 minutes over low heat.
  4. Remove the textile from the liquid and rinse thoroughly.

Vegetable oil . To make stains on the material softer and more susceptible to the influence of cleaning agents, use vegetable oil. You will also need washing powder, vinegar and bleach to prepare the mixture. Course of action:

  1. Dissolve 60 g of powder, 30 g of bleach, and 30 ml of table vinegar in 5 liters of warm water.
  2. Add 30 ml of any vegetable oil to the liquid.
  3. Soak textiles in the solution overnight.
  4. Rinse and wash the products by hand or in the washing machine.

How to remove an unpleasant smell

An unpleasant smell on bathroom accessories can appear due to the development of bacteria or the spread of fungus and mold. To eliminate musty odors from fibers:

  • Apply boiling (recommended only in the most extreme cases).
  • Wash textiles with vinegar and soda.
  • Dry and store towels properly.

Also, keep an eye on the cleanliness of the bath textiles. Even if a towel looks clean, it does not mean that the fibers are free of dust, dirt and bacteria. Experienced housewives recommend washing terry products at least once a week.

Drying and ironing

Remove the towels from the drum of the washing machine immediately after the wash cycle. Otherwise, the towels may have an unpleasant smell. Before hanging, shake the textile thoroughly to straighten out the crumpled fibers. Dry terry towels indoors away from sunlight.

Do not use the drying program in the washing machine and do not hang the products on artificial heat devices, as the fibers may deform and become stiffer.

It is not recommended to iron over-washed products, as thin and lint-free fibers will become stiffer. In principle, ironing can be avoided if the textiles are carefully leveled and properly dried.

If ironing is required for hygienic reasons, do not dry the material completely. Iron the towels slightly damp, setting the temperature on the iron to no higher than 150 degrees. Steaming with a steam generator would be the best option.

In order for towels to last as long as possible, it is important to properly store them. At the same time, it does not matter how you will fold and where you will keep textiles: in a closet, chest of drawers or on an open shelf in the bathroom. The main condition is to store towels only when they are completely dry. Otherwise, an unpleasant smell or even mold may appear.
