There are a lot of different situations, after which the clothes smell no worse than an appetizing piece of smoked meat or, on the contrary, a disgusting ashtray. This is a picnic with barbecue, and much less pleasant bonfires with fallen leaves, many of which burn in yards in the fall; the smell of cigarette smoke or burning from a fire. In any case, there is no thought or desire left except to get rid of the stench immediately, which over time only causes a headache and spoils the mood. The conversation will be about how to get rid of the smell of smoke on clothes.
The smell of smoke is produced by microparticles of coal, which are entangled in the fibers of the fabric. Sometimes it becomes extremely difficult to wash them, especially if the ash was oily with resins, and they can emit a stench for a very long time. Aromatics (perfume, air fresheners, etc.) are weak helpers, as their function is to stop the smell of smoke for a while, to veil it. But it will not be possible to stop it completely in this way. It is important to focus on the source of the “smell” and eliminate it.
Before washing
Method 1 . You will need:
- coffee,
- baking soda,
- peppermint.
For these ingredients, the process of removing the smell of smoke is similar. The method is also suitable for things that cannot be washed, such as jackets, sheepskin coats, leather goods.
- You will need a tight bag without holes, in which the spoiled clothes will fit.
- Place the items in a bag and cover with natural ground coffee or baking soda. Pour more, do not regret. It is important that the selected product is evenly distributed over the fabric.
- Seal the bag tightly and let it stand for a day. Periodically fear him.
After such a procedure, part of the burning smell will leave the clothes, and ordinary washing will be enough to put them in order.
Method 2. If the clothes can be washed, and there are stains on them in addition to an unpleasant smell, then use a solution of lemon juice.
- Pour warm water (about 30°C) into a basin or bath (see the volume of things).
- Squeeze lemon juice into the water (1-2 lemons per 10 liters of water).
- Soak the clothes in this solution for an hour and a half.
- Rinse.
The smell of smoke will wash out of the fabric, then wash it.

In any case, when it is necessary to remove the smell of smoke from clothes, then the washing mode is set to the maximum permissible for nested items. That is, if things withstand up to 50 °C, then we display them that way. Double rinsing and spinning at high speeds is a must. What cannot be washed at home (jackets, suits, dresses, bulky items, etc.), it is best to give it to the dry cleaners and not bother trying to get rid of the smell. This especially applies to excessive ash pollution. Alternatively, you can use the services of cleaning companies.
In other cases, the procedure is as follows:
- To begin, remove some of the odor using the methods described above using coffee, mint, baking soda or lemon, your choice. After that, rinse things by washing off the used product. Importantly! If you chose baking soda as your cleaning agent, add a little vinegar to the water when rinsing to remove any remaining baking soda.
- Examine the fabric for stains. To remove stains from ash and smoke, which emit a stench, you can use a high-quality detergent for dishes . As in the case of greasy stains (for example, from vegetable oil ), it can effectively cope with the problem. After washing off the product, you can start washing in the machine.

- You can add a glass of ordinary 9% vinegar to the compartment for liquid detergents during washing and set the pre-soak mode.
- As in the previous case, you should specify the maximum washing parameters for clothes in terms of temperature and washing mode, double rinsing and maximum spin. If the smell is still felt immediately after washing, then repeat the washing and again with pre-soaking.
After washing, things should be hung in a well-ventilated place, preferably outside or on an open balcony for a couple of days. Even the remains of the fire will go away permanently.
