The main task of household appliances is to simplify people’s lives, but due to improper operation, the opposite effect can occur. Unpleasant odors may appear in the washing machine, leaving a trace both in the insides of the appliance and on the laundry. There can be many reasons for the appearance of such an unpleasant phenomenon. Let’s consider super-methods, how to get rid of the unpleasant smell in the automatic washing machine.
Sources of stench
Before removing unpleasant odors from the washing machine, you need to identify the source of the problems that have arisen. There can be several of them:
- Stink when draining water. If the rotten smell is formed only when the water is drained, then the problem should be looked for in the drain filter. It should be cleaned once every 5-7 months. If it is not done, plaque and dirt will begin to accumulate on it, which, when wet, will rot and emit an unpleasant amber.
- The smell from the drum of the washing machine. After the washing process is finished, the bottom of the drum remains wet and dirty. If you do not dry the machine, after some time it will emit a musty smell. It is possible to increase the smelly effect if you store dirty laundry in a non-drying drum.
- Unpleasant sewage “aroma”. The causes of an unpleasant smell can lie in the clogging of drains. Residues of detergents, fabric lint, dirt, garbage, crumbs that gradually accumulate in drains, forming stagnation. Garbage gradually begins to rot, and after 3-4 weeks unpleasant sewage “aromas” appear. To remove the unpleasant smell, it is enough to clean the hoses.
- Repulsive ambre of dampness and mold. Fungi and bacteria quickly form in a moist environment. After each washing process, some water remains in the machine. The bad smell of dampness is quickly formed if you do not dry it after each use of household appliances. Plaque from powder, conditioner, dirt, lint – also contribute to the development of microorganisms in the device. If you periodically clean the inside of the device, you can forget about mold.

Why is the stench formed?
Before starting the fight against unpleasant odors, you need to study the reasons for their appearance:
- Using a lot of detergents. Many housewives believe that adding more detergent to the laundry than the amount indicated in the instructions will only make it better, but this is not the case. When using a large amount of detergents, all residues not used in the washing process will begin to settle on the working elements in the form of plaque. It is he who will later start to emit unpleasant odors.
- Sewerage. Household appliances for washing clothes may not always be the source of stench. The poor condition of the sewage system can affect the operation of the automatic machine. This is easy to check: just compare the smell in the appliance with the smell coming from the sink pipes. If they are identical, then the problem comes from the sewer pipes.
- Scale. The water contains a large amount of salt and magnesium. Most often, this leads to the fact that scale forms on the heating element of the washing machine. A large accumulation of dirt and detergents also affects the appearance. Because of this, the performance of the machine decreases, and the consumption of electricity increases. If you do not deal with scale, the equipment will soon be unusable.
- Bad condition of the hose. A washing machine cannot run forever. To extend the service life of the washing machine, it is necessary to carefully monitor its components. After a couple of years of operation, the hose in the automatic machine can wear out. Over time, dirt accumulates on it, reducing its performance. A small plaque can be cleaned by running the washing machine without laundry. But this method will not help to deal with heavy pollution. In such a situation, only the purchase and installation of a new hose will help.
- Dirt in the tray. Contamination of this element of the washing machine is a common cause of mold. If you regularly wash the tray, it will reduce the amount of dirt and prevent the appearance of musty aromas. If it was not possible to monitor the condition of the tray in time, and mold has already formed on it, it is enough to rinse it under a stream of water. When these manipulations still do not allow you to get rid of unpleasant odors, you should carefully check the washing machine for malfunctions, as well as for the presence of mold in other places.
- Dirt in the drain filter. A filter helps protect sewage pipes from dirt, detergents, and items of clothing getting into them. Once every 5-7 months, you must change it to a new one. Otherwise, the coordinated operation of the machine may be disrupted. Stagnant water will begin to appear, unpleasant odors will increase.

- Dirt in the feed channel. If the hostess did not take good care of the tray, there is a high probability of contamination in the channel. Conditioners and powders are not always completely washed off from the laundry tray, some remain on the walls, and mold appears over time. If you remove the tray from the machine, you can clean the channel from moldy stagnation and dirt by hand, using a regular toothbrush or a brush for washing bottles.
- Using low-quality detergents. Many housewives like to experiment. Using one powder or conditioner can sometimes lead to boredom. I want to try something new: a new aroma, new granules, new possibilities. But, such innovations do not always benefit the washing machine, especially in those cases when the new product turned out to be of poor quality. The agent that should not be used for washing clothes is easy to calculate by the formation of plaque. If odors appear in the drum after changing the detergent, it is advisable to return to the tested detergent. Otherwise, the smell will only intensify.
- Washing at low temperatures. Not all clothes can be washed at a temperature above 60⁰. But, when washing in cold water, detergents do not dissolve well. As a result, they settle on the internal parts of the machine, gradually leading to the formation of fungal plaque. To reduce the likelihood of fungus, you can use chlorine bleach. They help to eat away the mucus formed during washing, and wash off the plaque from the rubber cuffs.
Ways to get rid of the stench
When fighting unwanted smells, you can remember your grandmother’s recipes. All handy tools can be found in every apartment.
Copper sulfate
You can eliminate a strong unpleasant smell in the washing machine with the help of copper sulfate. It is excellent for getting rid of fungi. For this you need:
- Mix copper sulfate with water in a 1:1 ratio;
- Wet a clean rag in the resulting solution;
- Carry out processing of the drum and rubber cuff;
- Without wiping the solution, leave the machine in this form for 24 hours;
- After a day, put the machine in the “quick wash” mode and run it with the addition of one cap of powder;
- The final stage is to run off washing with ordinary water without using detergents.
Baking soda
If the hostess does not know what to do with mold, ordinary baking soda can come to the rescue. To carry out the cleaning procedure, you need:
- Add baking soda to the water in a ratio of 1:1;
- Thoroughly process the inside of the washing machine with the resulting solution;
- Without wiping the solution, leave the car in this form for 1 hour;
- After some time, with the help of a clean cloth or sponge, you need to remove the soda solution from the drum, door and rubber band;
- Run the machine in the “quick wash” mode without using detergents.

Lemon juice or acid
It is possible to clean the parts of the washing machine from mold and scale with the help of lemon juice or acid. For a quick result, it is best to use citric acid. Compared to juice, it is needed less in volume, and in terms of money, this option is considered the most profitable. For this you need:
- Citric acid in the amount of 150-250 g must be poured into the tray;
- Set the highest temperature regime and the longest washing time;
- Start the washing machine;
- After the procedure, wipe the machine well with a damp sponge;
- Remove the scale remaining in the drain.
Table vinegar
To get rid of limescale, mold and scale, you need to pour table vinegar into a drum or tray (orient yourself by the sources of pollution):
- Pour 350-400 ml of table vinegar into the washing machine;
- Set the highest temperature mode and start washing;
- After 5-10 minutes, washing should be stopped and left in the “soaking” position for 1-1.5 hours;
- When the soaking time comes to an end, the machine should be started again and wait for the end of the washing process;
- After completion, remove dirt from the filter and scale from the heating elements;
- Before washing the machine with water, mix water with vinegar in a ratio of 1:1 and wipe the insides of the unit with the resulting product;
- Finish the procedure by wiping the drum, door and rubber with a dry towel.
Bleach with chlorine
If the hostess does not know how to eliminate a strong musty smell, what is the best way to wash the drum and cuff so that the mold disappears, ordinary bleach can come to the rescue. To fight you need:
- 1 liter of chlorine bleach should be poured into each compartment of the tray;
- Set the maximum temperature regime and the longest duration of washing;
- Start the car;
- When the water heats up, it is necessary to stop the operation of household appliances for 2-2.5 hours;
- After the soaking time is over, start the washing mode again;
- When the washing is finished, pour 200 ml of table vinegar into the tray and start the “rinse” mode;
- When the rinsing mode comes to an end, start it again, but already “in idle mode” to eliminate the vinegar smell;
- At the end of the procedure, wipe the internal parts of the machine with a dry towel;
- Do not close the door for 24 hours.

Prevention
It is much better to prevent odor problems than to deal with them. In order for the machine not to stink and to serve for a long time without interruptions and breakdowns, you need to follow preventive measures:
- If water was detected after washing, then you should contact the master to check the operation of the drain pump.
- It is better to use ordinary powders for washing. It is better to abandon liquid conditioners, as they lead to the formation of fungi.
- To reduce scale formation, it is better to use filtered water for washing. Buying a filter is a good way to improve the efficiency of the equipment.
- Drain hoses require periodic replacement.
- Before washing, carefully clean the pockets from small garbage, crumbs, dirt.
- At least once a week, wash clothes at maximum temperatures.
- Periodically clean the heating elements. Emollients can be used to improve their performance.
- Once every 2 months, wash “unload” with the use of bleach.
- Use as much powder for washing as indicated in the instructions.
- Clean the drain filter several times a month.
- Do not close the machine door immediately after washing. It should take at least a day for the equipment to dry inside.
- Do not store dirty laundry in the washing machine. It is better to use specialized baskets for this.
After getting rid of unpleasant odors, you should not forget about prevention. Careful operation of household appliances will extend their service life and save a considerable amount of money.
