It would seem that in order to determine the amount of powder loaded into the washing machine, you just need to read the instructions on the detergent box, but not everything is so simple. First, the box usually shows averaged data, without describing specific cases. Secondly, manufacturers of household detergents are interested in increased sales volumes, so data on the recommended volume may be greatly exaggerated. Let’s analyze what affects how much powder to pour into the washing machine.
How dangerous is an excess amount of powder
Some people follow the rule in this matter, the more sprinkles, the better. But this threatens with serious consequences, up to the repair of the washing machine. An excessive amount of powder can lead to the following unpleasant results:
- during washing, not all detergents are washed out of the compartment, which will later lead to rust and breakage,
- an unpleasant smell will come from the drum of the washing machine, especially when using a cheap, low-quality detergent,
- white streaks will remain on the material.

Another point that is important to pay attention to when preparing for washing is the composition of the powder itself.
First, check that the cleaning agent is intended for use in a washing machine. Because hand washing substances contain compounds that lead to increased foam formation. If you pour them into the washing machine, the foam, being on the working parts of the device, can cause harm.
Secondly, make sure that the composition of the detergent does not contain chlorine and solvents, which lead to deterioration of the rubber parts of the washing machine.
Factors affecting the powder volume
The amount of powder loaded into the compartment is not always the same and depends on the following factors:
- dirty laundry and the presence of stains,
- weight of laundry,
- water hardness,
- water consumption during the washing period,
- type of fabric and washing mode.
If we talk about laundry contamination, then in the presence of old or capricious stains, you should not rely only on powder and pour more of it. Stain removers and bleaches are of great help in the fight against such pollution. If it is not possible to use special cleaning agents, then for moderately soiled clothes, the volume of powder is increased by 50%, and for heavy stains, a one-time wash with a double dose of detergent is suitable.
The hardness of the water also affects the washing process as a whole, it has long been known that when using soft water, laundry washes better. And when it is hard, there is a desire to pour more powder, maybe it will loosen, but this is not quite right. First, read the composition of the powder. In some detergents, softeners are added directly to the powder. From the household improvised means, soda can serve as a substitute for softening, which must be added to the compartment in the amount of several teaspoons. There is a restriction here – do not use soda for silk and wool. If there are no softeners or you don’t want to pour soda, just increase the volume of powder by 20-30 grams from the recommended amount, you don’t need to pour more.

How much to pour ideally
In order for washing to take place without negative consequences for the machine and linen, follow the following proportions: 1 tbsp. l. powder (25 grams) per 1 kg of laundry.
For example, if we are talking about a standard washing machine for 5 kg, the recommended loading dose is 4 kg, the powder will be needed:
- for normal washing 100 g,
- for heavily soiled clothes 150 g,
- for clothes with complex stains 200-225 g, or 100 g of powder and bleach or stain remover.
In order to better wash the clothes with the specified amount of detergent, soaking in warm water for 1-2 hours is recommended.
The manufacturers of cleaning products, in turn, recommend following slightly different proportions: from 150 to 220 g. This amount of powder makes sense when washing heavily soiled items, for example, work clothes.
In order to extend the life of your household helper and not spoil your clothes, you need not only to read the instructions of the manufacturer of household appliances, but also to use common sense. Now, knowing the correct amount of detergent, you will perfectly cope with this task.
