It is impossible to imagine a modern office or a cozy apartment without blinds. But stains on them can spoil the most radiant mood. In general, it is worth starting with the fact that it is not necessary to wash blinds often, they are treated with a special antistatic impregnation that protects against dust and dirt. When washing, this impregnation is washed away. Therefore, the lamellae will get dirty more often. The task is how to wash the vertical blinds and handle the protective coating more carefully.

Having decided to wash the blinds, it is first necessary to determine what material they are made of, as it depends on whether they can come into contact with water. Blinds can be made of natural fabrics or synthetics.

How to wash vertical fabric blinds

Vertical blinds made of natural fabrics are divided into:

  • silk;
  • cotton;
  • linen

Natural fabrics can shrink and deform during washing, so it is better to clean them instead of washing them:

  • Clean with a vacuum cleaner 2-3 times a year.
  • Wipe with a slightly damp cloth.

The same goes for jacquard. All information about cleaning / washing is placed by the manufacturer on the product labels. You should be careful when buying.

Machine wash

If the blinds are made of polyester or synthetics, then it is quite permissible to subject them even to machine washing.

  1. First, the lamellas need to be vacuumed. It is important to do this very carefully, not allowing bends, otherwise the product will break.
  2. Carefully remove the slats from the windows without damaging the plastic structures. Carefully remove all chains and ropes before washing the blinds in the washing machine.
  3. Roll the blinds into tight rolls and place them in a laundry bag or a pillowcase if you don’t have a special bag.
  4. If the curtains are excessively dirty, soak them for half an hour in a soap solution to soften the dust and dirt.
  5. Before starting washing, turn on the washing machine in idle mode. This will allow you to wash it from the remnants of detergents and colored fibers that may have remained from the previous washing.
  6. Set one of the modes on the washing machine: delicate wash, gentle mode, sensitive wash, delicate clothes.
  7. Turn off spin, additional rinse and drying. These functions can damage the blinds.
  8. The water temperature is no higher than 30 degrees.
  9. Only liquid detergents designed for delicate items can be used for washing blinds. Ordinary powder can leave unsightly streaks on your slats.

How to dry properly

It is not recommended to rub and squeeze these products. Carefully hang to dry, you can hang small weights at the bottom so that the dried blinds are more even. Do not use a hair dryer or other heating devices.

Handwash

If washing in a washing machine is prohibited, it is worth considering the algorithm of how to wash blinds at home and by hand.

  1. Dismantle blinds.
  2. Place in the bath and rinse with warm water, heated no higher than 30 degrees.
  3. Separately dilute a small amount of detergent in warm water, for this purpose a special agent or composition for cleaning carpets, neutral detergent or gel for children’s underwear is suitable. The main thing is that there are no bleaches and chlorine in the composition, and the consistency is liquid.
  4. Immerse the blinds in the solution.
  5. Walk with soft movements along the canvas. Circular and transverse movements can cause abrasions, so they should be avoided. An elastic cloth or a soft brush is optimal for this work.
  6. Wash off the foam periodically. Repeat the process several times.
  7. Rinse thoroughly, let the water drain.
  8. Hang the blinds in place preferably wet.

If there are greasy stains on the shutters, dishwashing detergents will help remove them. Ink stains can be removed with ethyl alcohol. Before removing the stain, be sure to check on a small, inconspicuous area how the fabric of the blinds will react to the stain remover.
