Vegetable oil, butter, machine oil, animal fat, medicines and other oil-based products – all this, after getting on clothes, leaves a greasy mark and washes off in the same way. Such pollution can be eliminated with various purchased and improvised means. The most effective will be the use of sorbents or substances that split fat. Let’s consider in detail how to wash an oil stain from clothes at home.
Before washing, clean the stain on the fabric from dirt and dust. This must be done, otherwise the dust absorbed by the grease will become an insurmountable obstacle. Also, for washing, you will need to have:
- cotton wool discs;
- napkin (microfiber);
- toilet paper / paper towels;
- cellophane bag;
- sponge (clean).
Cellophane and towels are placed on the wrong side of the fabric so that other parts of the clothes are not damaged. Liquid stain remover is applied with discs. Moisture and traces of pollution are removed with a napkin and a sponge.

If the stain is fresh
Cover the greasy mark with any clean napkin, even paper (but without pictures and letters) – it will absorb some of the oil. Do not rub the product! Then you can throw away the napkin and start washing.
Let’s analyze how to remove a fresh oil stain:
- Salt . We use small food. Apply a thick layer and gently rub into the fabric. Wait 10-15 minutes, remove the salt and apply a new batch. Repeat all this until the fat stain is completely removed from the clothes.
- Household soap . First, wet the thing with cold water, then treat it with a piece of soap, rub it thoroughly and rinse it. Repeat until the traces of fat disappear. After that, immerse the clothes in warm water, apply soap and leave for 10-12 hours.
- Gel for washing dishes . Thick and dye-free is required. This tool perfectly splits fat. Wet the oil stain and apply the product to it. Rub into the fabric. Wait a quarter of an hour, rinse the clothes.
- Glycerin and ammonia . Mix denatured alcohol and glycerin 1:1, distribute with a disc over the contamination. Wait 10-15 minutes, wash off with clean water.
- Soda . Pour on the oil stain and leave for 20 minutes. Then clean, remove the remaining oil from dense fabrics with a sponge, if the fabric is delicate – wash.
After the manipulations, be sure to thoroughly rinse the clothes and wash them in the usual way – by hand or in a washing machine.

If the stain is old
If you have soiled your clothes for a long time, you will need to work to wash them. But fortunately, there are several effective recipes for getting rid of an oil stain.
- Gasoline . Purified gasoline will come in handy if the item cannot be washed by immersing it in water (upholstered furniture, outerwear). Be sure to buy special purified in stores (the one used for refueling cars is not suitable). Mix gasoline with starch in an amount that turns the mixture into a thick paste. Next, apply the mixture to the oil stain and rub. After waiting for it to dry, clean the paste with a brush and a wet sponge, collect excess moisture with a napkin. If possible, wash the clothes in the washing machine to wash off the remains of grease and gasoline.
- Alcohol and ammonia . Mix vinegar and alcohol in a ratio of 1: 3 (a teaspoon is a measure), apply cotton pads to the oil stain on the front and inside of the clothes (the pads can be applied and left). Leave to absorb for 2 hours, rinse the thing in cool water. Wash with soap.
- Acetone . Even removes paint, but is not suitable for delicate fabrics. Distribute acetone with a disc on the oil trail, let it act for a couple of minutes and rinse the treated area. Wash the clothes completely as usual (acetone has an unpleasant smell).
- Stain removers . Basically, all stain removers have the same active substances, namely: active oxygen, enzymes and nonionic surfactants. They are responsible for breaking down fat. You can choose from similar stain removers: “Vanish” (a wide range for all types of fabrics), “Ase” (only for white fabric), “Amway” and “Antipyatin”.
