Blankets made of wool are light, warm and environmentally friendly, but caring for them requires effort: they quickly become bags and sources of allergies. But how to wash a woolen blanket and keep it clean without spoiling the wool?
Which ones can be washed and which ones can’t?
Wool blankets are divided into three types:
- Quilted (wool stuffed inside a fabric cover and quilted) – can be washed both by hand and in a machine.
- solid fabric (one dense cloth) – washed only by hand and infrequently.
- Fur (the fabric is upholstered with wool) – cannot be washed, only dry cleaning is allowed.

Preparation for washing
To begin with, the product should be properly dusted – this way, less detergent will be needed, and the process of removing dirt will be easier.
Then the tool itself is selected. Conventional washing powders are absolutely not suitable: they are difficult to rinse, which later leads to allergies when using a blanket, they damage the structure of wool, thereby increasing wear.
Suitable for:
- Special liquid gel for woolen clothes.
- Household soap (for camel wool).
- A mixture of non-alkaline liquid soap and borax (for sheep).
Washing in a washing machine
It is best to place the product in a special cover when machine washing. You should choose a delicate washing mode, a special mode for wool or minimum revolutions, set the water temperature to no higher than 30 degrees.
You can squeeze a woolen blanket in a washing machine! It is better to set the rinse twice or run it twice to remove the detergent as much as possible – you don’t need soap separations and white spots on the surface, do you?
We remind you: the washing machine can only be used for camel and quilted sheep products.
Handwash
Fill the bathtub with warm water no hotter than 30 degrees, add the selected detergent, soak the blanket. Turn over several times, beat slightly, but in no case do not rub or squeeze !!! If there are strong stains, scrub with a brush.

Drying after washing
Forget about push-ups!!! Let the water just flow. And then carefully cover the blanket with a terry sheet, roll it into a roll – let the fabric absorb all the excess. Never place or hang the blanket vertically, in direct sunlight, or on batteries.
You just need to leave the product in a dry, well-ventilated room or outside in the shade. Sometimes the roll needs to be unrolled, straightened and rolled again.

Dry cleaning
First of all, you need to choose a cleaning agent. You should not pour it on the stain: read the instructions, it says in what proportion it is diluted with water. Dilute, beat well into a foam, wet a soft sponge, rub the stain. No need to rub hard. Failure to follow these simple instructions will leave a stain.
After dry cleaning, unlike washing, the woolen blanket can be hung vertically on the ropes.
And a few more tips for caring for a wool blanket:
- To wash less often, knock out, ventilate more often (of course, in dry weather).
- Stains can be removed without detergents: let them dry, then use a clothes brush.
- In winter, put it on fresh, clean snow for a short time: this way you can get rid of odors and refresh the product without washing.
With proper care, a woolen blanket will retain its warmth and useful properties for more than a dozen years.
