Iodine is one of the most common antiseptics. Many people love it for the fact that, unlike green , it quickly disappears from the skin. But not from clothes! It will be difficult to remove iodine stains, but nothing is impossible! You can fight with folk remedies or with the help of household chemicals. Let’s consider in detail how to wash iodine from clothes.
How to remove iodine by folk remedies
- Starch
The stain should be wetted with cold water and well sprinkled with starch. As you know, starch is an indicator of iodine, and soon the stain will turn blue. As soon as this happens, rinse the stain under running water and wash the item with any stain remover in the usual way.
Even if you don’t have starch at home, don’t despair! Cut the potato tuber in half and rub the spot soaked in cold water on the front and back. After the stain turns blue, rinse and wash with stain remover as usual.

- Milk
Soak the thing in milk for 15-20 minutes. After that, rinse it in soapy water and wash it with a stain remover in the usual way.
- Soda and vinegar
This method is quite effective, but not suitable for synthetic fabrics. Pour baking soda on the stain and pour vinegar on top. In order for the chemical reaction to take place, it is necessary to wait at least 4 hours (it is better to leave it overnight), after which thoroughly rinse the item and wash it in the usual way.
- Aqueous alcohol (ammonia)
This method is for the patient, as the procedure will have to be repeated several times to achieve the result, besides, it is not suitable for things made of artificial silk. Wet a cotton swab with ammonia solution and wipe the stain with it, then rinse the thing with water. Repeat until the stain is completely gone.
- Nail polish remover (acetone)
This method is again not suitable for synthetic fabrics and is very aggressive. If you decide to stop at it, test it on an inconspicuous area of the fabric first. Wet a cotton swab in acetone and rub it on the stain of additional disappearance, then rinse the thing in water and wash it in the usual way.

- Alcohol
Attention, only denatured alcohol is suitable for colored fabrics! Any liquid containing alcohol can be used. Dip a cotton swab in alcohol and wipe the stain, then rinse and wash in the usual way.
How to remove iodine using household chemicals
- Household soap
This is the easiest way – soak the item in water and rub the stain liberally with soap. After that, you should wait 15 minutes, rinse the thing and wash it in the usual way.
- Dishwashing liquid
Any detergent will do. Wet the thing and pour a lot of product on the stain. Leave for a few hours, then rinse and wash as usual.
- Pipe cleaner
Any pipe cleaner that contains sodium hydroxide is suitable. Dilute half a teaspoon of the product in a glass of water. And apply the resulting solution to the stain with a pipette. As soon as the stain discolors, immediately rinse the thing in water to avoid deformation of the fabric. Then wash in the usual way.
Attention: this method is not suitable for colored and thin fabrics!
- Reagent for fixing photos
This method is not easy because this reagent – sodium hyposulfite – is not easy to buy. It is sold only in specialized photo shops. Dilute a small amount of the reagent in a glass of water and apply the solution to the stain, then immediately rinse the thing with water and wash it in the usual way.
- Oxygen stain remover
Any stain remover with active oxygen is suitable for this method. Follow the instructions on the tool. First, apply the stain remover directly to the stain, wait about 15 minutes, and wash as usual with the same stain remover added.
As you can see, there are a huge number of ways to wash iodine stains, but it is better if you do not delay it for a long time, because it is much easier to get rid of a fresh stain.
