Clean clothes are always attractive to the owner and others, so stains on them spoil the mood. It is not easy to remove traces of markers that children love to draw with. You can take things to the dry cleaners, but most often there is no time for this. In addition, it is better to remove pollution while they are fresh, so information on how to remove felt-tip pens from clothes is useful to many.
What you need to know
Sometimes it takes a few tries to remove a felt-tip pen from clothes. Knowledge of the following points will help to cope with such washing faster and better:
- what type the marker belongs to;
- what type of fabric is contaminated.

Determine the felt-tip pen ink by marking, if it is preserved. Markers are shared:
- on water or chalk;
- alcohol;
- oil-based;
- with paint refills.
Tip: For children’s art, buy markers made of water-based ink with a special “easy to peel off” icon, as their marks are easier to trace.
When choosing a handy tool, the following principle applies: like is treated with like.
Before starting to unlock things, it is important:
- check the spot detector on the inner fold of the product;
- wash in cold water;
- remove pollution from inside out;
- clean from the edges to the middle;
- do not put things in the dryer until you are sure that there are no divorces.

Water-based marker ink
The choice of cleaning method depends on the fabric. If it is delicate, then you need to choose a gentle method. We will try to remove stains from a T-shirt in different ways: from simple to complex.
- Household soap . The easiest way. Wash the T-shirt under cold water. If it didn’t help, try the next tool.
- Oxygen bleach . Important: Pay attention to its inscription: for white clothes; colored linen or universal. Take a basin for washing and prepare an aqueous solution of bleach, according to the instructions. Soak a thing in it and leave it for a while. Wash in the washing machine or by hand.
Attention: Do not pour the concentrate on the product itself, otherwise the fabric may become discolored.
- Gel for washing dishes . First, cover the stain with detergent and smear with an old toothbrush or sponge. Leave for 24 hours. Wash in any way.
Tip: Gel for washing dishes is also suitable for finishing T-shirts and shirts made of colored materials. In order not to spoil them, we use only a colorless product.
- Toothpaste . Squeeze it onto a brush or sponge. Smear along the trail of the marker. Gently clean with cotton pads until it disappears.
- Baking soda mixture . Take a glass or ceramic dish, mix ammonia with soda in a ratio of 2:1. Scoop up the slurry with a sponge, apply it to the stain and leave it for a few minutes. Rub with a brush until the felt-tip pen is completely gone and rinse with water. Hand wash or machine wash.
A stain from an alcohol marker
We recall the main principle: “like is treated with like”. If you use similar substances, it is easy to remove such stains. All possible methods:
- Alcoholic products (medical alcohol, vodka, cologne). Put the thing on the table, and under the stain from the wrong side – napkins. Take a suitable alcohol-containing agent, wet a clean cloth with it and wipe the marker with wiping movements. Finally, let the clothes dry and then wash with laundry soap.
- Hydrogen peroxide . We remove stains only from white clothes in this way. We do the same steps as in the method above.
Important: Use hydrogen peroxide only on cotton or synthetic products .
- Chlorine bleach. If the material is white cotton or linen, then dilute the linen in water, according to the instructions.
Important: The action time of this type of bleach is different and depends on the type of fabric. Do not leave the soaked thing in the solution for a long time. As soon as the traces are gone, wash immediately.
- Hair varnish . The following steps will help to get rid of pollution. Place napkins under the contaminated area. Spray nail polish on it. Wipe off dirt with a cotton pad. Wash with household soap in warm water.
Important: Do not let the varnish dry, otherwise it will fix the dirt from the ink.
Oil-based felt-tip pen
We determine the type of damaged material. If it is delicate, we recommend a gentler method:
- Vegetable oil . Pour a little oil into the dish. Wet the cotton pad and smear the felt-tip pen mark. Wait a couple of hours. Apply a degreaser (dishwashing gel) on top of the oil and gently rub with a clean cotton pad. Wash in a convenient way.
- Oil solvents . This method is suitable for coarse and denim fabrics. Let’s try to remove the stain step by step. Dip a cotton swab in the solvent and check its effect on the seam. If the material has not deteriorated, wipe, changing the contaminated cotton wool. Rinse under a strong stream of water.
- Glycerin is used when there is no time to clean a fresh stain. Treat contamination with pharmacy glycerin, leave the product for a couple of hours. Then wash with a warm soapy salt solution.

A felt-tip pen with paint refills
It is more difficult to remove such traces. We choose:
- Lemon juice. Cut and squeeze the lemon into a suitable dish. Soak a clean white cloth in the juice and rub it into the contaminated fabric. Rinse with water.
Tip : To wash stains from colored clothes, test the effect of the juice on an inconspicuous area. If the fabric is delicate, dilute lemon juice with water in a ratio of 1:1. Clean the mark of the marker on the woolen product with a mixture of lemon juice and soda.
- Solvents for paint and varnish materials . Put the thing on the table. Under the stain – a paper towel. Wet the gauze cloth in the solvent and soak up the contamination with blotting movements. Leave for 10-30 minutes. Gently rub with a clean cloth. Rinse. Wash with conditioner to wash away the smell. If the paint has not gone all the way, repeat the procedure again.
- Vinegar-soda solution . In a glass or ceramic dish, dilute 1 tablespoon of vinegar to 1/2 cup. l. of soda Blot the stains with this mixture using a cotton swab. Leave to dry. Wash in cold water.
We hope that thanks to our tips, you will be able to wash any felt-tip pen from clothes. Let your clean things make you happy!
