Suede jackets have many advantages: beautiful appearance, comfort during wearing and extreme strength of the material. However, there is one drawback that discourages many from buying them – it is the difficulty in care. Suede products require constant maintenance to maintain their attractive appearance. Although it is best to give them to a dry cleaner, you can try and wash a suede jacket at home. Therefore, now we will take a closer look at how to wash a suede jacket, as well as share useful tips and interesting cleaning methods.
Care for a suede jacket begins from the moment of purchase. If you want the product to please your eye for a long time, it is recommended to buy a special brush for cleaning suede products. These brushes clean the surface easily and do not harm the skin. Brush the jacket after each wear to remove dirt.
If the jacket gets wet, first hang it to dry, and then start cleaning.

Periodically, even when the jacket is not in use, take it out of the closet and clean it of dust. This is very important, because you can wash a suede jacket from accumulated dirt only in a dry cleaner.
Stain removal
If a stain has appeared on a suede jacket, there are several ways to remove it. Try rubbing the stain with an eraser or a rubber brush.
If this method does not help, try a soap solution with the addition of ammonia:
- Dip a cloth in this solution and wipe the stain.
- Then wash the area with a solution of water and vinegar and hold it over the steam for 2-3 minutes.
If there are worn areas on the jacket (for example, on the sleeves, cuffs, near the pockets, collar or buttons), they can be refreshed with a solution of a glass of milk and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Wet these areas with the solution, let them dry, then scrub with a stiff suede brush.
Additionally, you can wash a suede jacket with greasy stains at home. To do this, apply cornstarch to the contaminated area and leave it for several hours. The starch will draw out the fat, and then it will be enough to brush it off. If the stain still remains, you can use one of the previously mentioned methods to remove the stain.
Washing
If you still decide to wash a suede jacket, you should follow a few rules.
- Use a mild detergent, if possible, special for leather. You can also use shampoo or liquid soap.
- Set the washing machine mode to “no spin” or minimum spin speed, use a temperature of up to 35 degrees and choose a delicate or hand wash mode. Be sure to turn off automatic drying.
When washing by hand, use a soft brush. Soak the jacket in warm, soapy water and brush problem areas such as the collar, cuffs, pockets, zipper and buttons. It should be washed quickly, as suede cannot be kept in water for a long time. Then rinse the jacket thoroughly several times until the water runs clear.

To dry, lay the suede jacket completely flat to avoid wrinkling. You can use clothespins or clips to keep the jacket in shape and prevent it from deforming. Dry the jacket away from heat sources.
In addition, there is another way to wash a suede jacket:
- Spread the jacket on a terry towel on the floor.
- Prepare a basin of soapy water that produces lots of suds. WITH
- dip a sponge in this foam and apply it to the suede, wiping the soiled areas.
- Then use another sponge dipped in clean water to wash the suds off the jacket.
These tips will help you keep your suede jacket in top condition. Remember that careful care and proper washing will help preserve the beauty and longevity of your suede product.
