Finding an effective solution to remove the smell of cat urine from shoes is not an easy task. First, the inside of the shoe is relatively closed. Secondly, dense walls and insoles reliably store any “aroma”, preventing its weathering for a long time. In addition, the feet often sweat, which means that the cat’s urine mixes with the sweat, which will give an even stronger smell that will be more difficult to remove. Fortunately, not everything is so sad. The experience of housewives has made it possible to identify the most effective means that help eliminate even the most persistent cat “smell”.
Potassium permanganate
It is suitable for any dark shoes, but for light shoes, you should look for other means. The procedure in this case involves the following:
- Wipe the urine with a dry napkin, removing the moisture dry.
- With a strong solution of potassium permanganate (dark purple), moisten the tampon abundantly and thoroughly wipe all places, including uncontaminated ones. Odor molecules still managed to penetrate and spread over the entire surface.
- Wipe the thing again, rinsing the tampon in potassium permanganate.
- After making sure that the work has been done conscientiously, dry the shoes with a soft, dry cloth, and then put them out to dry on the balcony or near an open window.
Sometimes potassium permanganate is replaced with iodine if the color of the shoes is very dark. In this case, iodine is used undiluted: it is applied to a tampon and wiped on shoes. Next, put the shoes to dry in a ventilated place.
Vinegar
If the shoes are light, and you cannot use iodine or potassium permanganate, ordinary table vinegar will help. You can also take vinegar essence. For this, the following manipulations are performed:
- Pour vinegar into a cup and dilute to a third with water.
- Wet a sponge with this composition and wipe the shoes. In a very deplorable situation, the boots can be soaked in this water for several hours.
- After that, send the shoes to dry in the fresh air.
If the stain is old and the smell has already taken root, we recommend adding salt . In this case, the shoes are soaked in vinegar, and then sprinkled liberally with salt. Everything is left like this for 15 minutes, after which the salt is removed, and the shoes are wiped with a dry cloth. Shoes must be dried in the open air for several hours.
Soda
Soda neutralizes odors well. For this you need:
- Sprinkle the dirt liberally with soda.
- Wait for complete absorption.
- Remove the swollen pulp, repeat the procedure again if necessary.
- Clean the shoes with a dry cloth and put them in the air for several hours.
If the pollution is old, then do it a little differently:
- Sprinkle the shoes with a slurry of soda and water.
- Rub thoroughly to eliminate the pungent smell.
- Leave it like this for half an hour.
- Remove the porridge with a cloth and wipe dry.
- Take the shoes to the air for final drying.
Camphor alcohol
If the sneakers are dirty, the means listed above will not be so effective. The multi-layer absorbent material of sports shoes instantly absorbs liquid and odor, preventing it from airing out for a very long time. Camphor alcohol will help here – a substance with a strong smell will penetrate loose tissue and neutralize urine. To do this, you need to do the following:
- Apply camphor to cotton wool.
- Wipe problem areas.
- Leave a fresh cotton pad soaked in camphor alcohol overnight inside the sneakers.
- In the morning, remove the disk, and dry the shoes in the air.
Hydrogen sulfide peroxide
The caustic hydrogen sulfide composition will help get rid of the caustic smell in a matter of minutes. Light-colored shoes and natural leather can be wiped with an undiluted composition, and for black and colored ones, the composition can be diluted with water. The procedure is as follows:
- Wet the tampon in the composition and thoroughly wipe the problem area.
- Dry the shoes with a soft cloth and repeat everything again.
- Next, air everything on the balcony until the cat smell completely disappears.
Citric acid
Lemon is good not only for baking, but also for removing unpleasant foot odor. Everything is very simple:
- Sprinkle the shoes with acid and leave to react for half an hour.
- Rinse well after a while.
- Dry the product in the air.
Household soap
It is very suitable for removing both fresh stains and old odors. Household soap can be used even if after using other means the residual “fragrance” still remains.
The first way:
- Wet the soap with water and rub the inside of the shoes liberally.
- Rub everything additionally, ensuring absorption.
- If the instructions allow, wash the shoes in a machine or clean them by hand with a brush and water.
- Dry on the balcony or outside.
The second way. Here, soap is supposed to be crushed on a grater. In this case:
- Add slightly warmed glycerin drop by drop to the soap shavings.

Vodka, alcohol

What is not suitable for removing cat urine
- Air fresheners, deodorants, cologne and other aromatic sprays. These products temporarily mask the smell, and then amplify it with triple power. Urine mixes with chemistry and turns into a rattling mixture, which will be even more difficult to remove.
- Chlorine. How strange it is. Chlorine not only does not scare away, but also attracts domestic cats. And this means that cats will use their favorite shoes as a toilet more than once.
