How to clean an iron from burnt fabric – top 10 ways

If the fabric is ironed at the wrong temperature, it will most likely melt and stick to the sole of the appliance. After that, you will not be able to use it for its intended purpose, you will have to first figure out how to clean the iron from burnt fabric. We will consider how to do this without damaging the cover of the electric assistant.

How to clean the iron

The number one tool for all types of work surfaces is a special cleaning pencil. The effective and affordable device is used as follows:

1. Carefully study the instructions for using the cleaning agent.
2. Turn on the iron and heat it to the temperature specified in the instructions.
3. Slowly, without pressure, draw with a pencil on the contaminated area. You can’t press hard, because broken pieces can get into the steam holes.
4. After the entire burned area is outlined, we take an unnecessary cotton fabric and iron it. All the soot will remain on the cotton material, the main thing is that it is initially clean.

Clean burnt fabric with a pencil in a well-ventilated room or in the fresh air, as a strongly heated pencil evaporates intensively, or rather, smokes. Inhalation of these fumes is unlikely to improve the health of people in the room during cleaning.

Vinegar

Acetic acid will help to clean the burnt working surface of the household appliance. The algorithm of actions that will contribute to this:

1. Add two tablespoons of vinegar to a glass of water (180-200).
2. Turn on the iron and heat it to a temperature at which you can still touch its sole with an unprotected hand and not get burned.
3. Wet a clean rag or cotton swab in the prepared mixture and wipe the burnt area.

Alternative method:

1. Moisten a clean cloth abundantly with concentrated vinegar.
2. We put the warm, turned off iron on a wet rag and leave it overnight.
3. In the morning, wipe the sole of the appliance with soapy water, then rinse and wipe dry.

In the course of cleaning, the vinegar will intensively evaporate, giving off a characteristic smell, which can create some discomfort and cause irritation of the respiratory tract. To avoid such consequences, ensure sufficient air circulation in the room during the work.

Household soap

This universal cleaning agent will help to wash away traces of fabric that have burned relatively recently:

1. Add a tablespoon of soap shavings to a glass of warm water and mix thoroughly.
2. Apply the prepared mixture to the warm surface of the iron with cotton or a cloth.
3. Wait 20 minutes, then wash off the residue with clean water and wipe with a towel.

It will not be possible to wipe off old sunburn marks in this way.

Table salt

Sodium chlorine has excellent cleaning properties and is in every home, even if its residents prefer not to salt their food. Let’s consider two methods of removing burnt tissue with its help:

1. Pour a glass of coarse-grained salt on a thick cardboard and make an even layer, about 5 mm thick, heat the electrical appliance as much as possible and iron the salty surface until the burnt spot disappears.
2. We wrap two tablespoons of salt with a thin cotton cloth and three of these bags on the hot sole of a burnt iron.

The Teflon coating is very sensitive to any abrasive materials, so the method should be used with extreme caution, and it is better to refrain from it and resort to more gentle cleaning methods.

Cleaning with a paraffin candle

An ordinary candle will help to eliminate small burns and plaque. Its use somewhat resembles the process of cleaning with a special pencil and looks as follows:

1. We heat the iron to the maximum.
2. We wrap one edge of the candle with paper or fabric.
3. Smoothly, from bottom to top, we guide the candle along the heated sole. At the same time, the sole must be at a negative angle to prevent wax from flowing into the steam holes.
4. Let it cool and wipe the warm surface with a clean, damp cloth.

Hydrogen peroxide, ammonia and vinegar

The complex use of medical drugs and food supplements will help to get rid of a burn that happened recently at home.

1. Add 5 drops of ammonia to half a glass of water and stir.
2. We alternately wipe the burnt area with the prepared solution and hydrogen peroxide.

All manipulations are carried out only on cooled equipment. For wiping, we use a soft, clean rag made of natural fabric.

Baking soda + hydroperite

Abrasive soda acts relatively gently, but for some surfaces it may be enough to cause small scratches. Therefore, it is better to clean burnt clothes with soda only on steel surfaces. This can be done in the following way:

1. We heat the iron to the maximum.
2. We take a hydroperite tablet and carefully scrape the soot with it.
3. We turn it off and, while it cools down, prepare a paste-like mixture of soda and water.
4. We apply the prepared composition to the warm surface of the iron.
5. Wait 5 minutes, rinse with warm water and wipe with a tissue.

To clean the iron from slightly burnt fabric, it is enough to wipe the sole with a hydroperite tablet.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste also contains an abrasive, but it is so fine that this tool can be used for any type of coating.

1. Squeeze a sufficient amount of paste onto a warm iron.
2. We take a soft brush or a cloth napkin and try to clean the burned area with it.
3. We wipe the remains of the paste together with the soot with a damp cloth.

Acetone and other solvents

If a plastic bag or some other cellophane object suddenly sticks to the sole of the iron, any solvent will help to remove it. The most aggressive available are acetone, 647, and nail polish remover. Use liquid for nails with caution and only transparent. Otherwise, the process is as follows:

1. Wet a soft natural fabric in the solvent and wipe the burnt surface with it.
2. Wash off the residue with warm water and detergent, then wipe dry.

All manipulations are carried out only with the device turned off, and its working surface should not be hot.

We clean the Teflon coating

Teflon-coated irons are in high demand among most consumers, despite the relatively high prices. This is due to functionality and good performance when ironing most fabrics. In order not to deprive Teflon irons of their indisputable advantage over uncoated products, you should pay attention to the following methods of removing burnt synthetics:

• The safest and most effective means is a cleaning pencil. Use it according to the instructions and a positive result is guaranteed.
• If there is no pencil, try concentrated 70% vinegar. We soak them with soot, turn on the iron and heat it to the maximum. Let it cool down and wash off the remains along with impurities.

An alternative method will also help. Soak a cloth napkin with vinegar concentrate and place an iron on it so that the burnt spot is in contact with the active substance. After a few hours, you can clean it with a damp cloth.
