Manufacturers place labels on their products indicating various useful information. In most cases, it is easy to remove such a sticker, but even if it was successful, traces will still remain. If it is not possible to immediately wipe off the glue from the sticker, after some time dirt will stick to it, and you will have to clean it too. Let’s consider effective ways to wipe off glue from stickers, labels, price tags, and traces of scotch tape.
Professional tools
Quickly and without consequences, modern preparations sold at retail outlets will help to get rid of traces of glue. The most popular of them are:
- Scotch Remover. Removing traces of tape and labels is the main purpose of this product. Its composition includes active citrus oils, with the help of which stains from stickers, tar, resin and self-adhesive films are dissolved.
- Liquid Moly. The universal sticker cleaner will help to remove marks from glass, metal and plastic resistant to its influence without a trace. It consists of natural components.
- The composition of the drug includes a complex of special additives that penetrate deep into the pollution, after which their softening and partial splitting occurs. Quickly removes persistent adhesive stains and traces of bitumen, while being safe for the treated surface.
- Profoam 2000. A wide-spectrum product. Suitable for processing any coatings, has no smell, removes traces of glue, labels, marker, oil and many other contaminants.
- Fine Glass. The main purpose is glass cleaning. In addition, the mixture completely washes away adhesive traces on dishes, ceramic surfaces, metal and most types of plastic.

Homemade recipes
The purchase of special means is not always justified: not so serious pollution leaves behind labels. Otherwise, the manufacturer would not glue them. The drugs listed above should be used if they are available, in other cases you can completely get by with improvised means.
Mechanical cleaning by hand
Wipe off the glue from the sticker by hand, it is possible if it is relatively fresh and can be removed without much difficulty.
- Rub the adhesive layer with your hands, making small spherical balls from it.
- After a satisfactory result is achieved, the remains are washed off with usual means.
- In case of incomplete removal of impurities, we use the methods described below.
Vegetable oil
This product is available in almost every kitchen, and with its help it is possible to remove glue residues from a surface that does not absorb oil, for example, from a bottle or ceramic dishes. Olive, flax or refined sunflower are suitable. Sequence of actions:
- We cover the remains of the sticker with an even layer of oil.
- We wait a couple of minutes for the paper with glue to soak in, after which it is easier to remove.
- Scrape off the softened fragments with any suitable object – a knife, plastic card or nails.
- Everything that remains can be washed off with hot water and washing-up liquid.
If suddenly there is no oil, but there is mayonnaise, perform the above procedure with its help.
Alcohol
Any alcohol-containing products are suitable: vodka, cologne, deodorant. The higher the concentration, the more productive the process will be.
- Wet a cloth or napkin in alcohol.
- We wipe the sticky trace.
- We wash off the remains.
The method should be used with caution. Not every surface is able to withstand the influence of alcohol-containing mixtures without consequences. To avoid deformation of the treated coating, conduct a preliminary test on an inconspicuous piece of material.

Painter’s tape
The wedge-wedge method. It will work only in cases with fresh, not strongly glued, labels. In addition to painter’s tape, any other high-quality tape will do.
- We carefully stick adhesive tape on the remnants of the label.
- Firmly hold part of the tape with your hand.
- With a sharp movement, we try to tear off the tape and fragments stuck to it.
- We repeat the procedure until a positive result is achieved.
Table vinegar
This food additive will remove old, dried traces of stickers, labels, stickers and any kind of tape. The treated surface is not of fundamental importance, since vinegar does not belong to aggressive cleaning liquids.
- Apply vinegar concentrate (11%) to the area to be cleaned.
- We wait 5 minutes for the paper and glue to dissolve.
- We remove the softened traces with a thin object.
- Wipe with a damp soapy sponge.
- We look at the result, if necessary, repeat the operation.
Combustible mixtures
Kerosene, refined gasoline or lighter fluid will clean all known types of sticky paper and films from glass or similar surfaces.
- Wet a rag or napkin with gasoline.
- Apply a thin layer of adhesive contamination.
- Wait for 2 minutes, then wipe with the same cloth until the stain is completely gone.
- After, you can wash with a warm soapy solution to remove the smell, if there is one.
Solvent properties of the above-mentioned mixtures make their use undesirable on a number of surfaces, for example, products painted with oil varnishes or paints and some types of plastic.
Heat treatment with a hair dryer
The method is suitable for removing old stains from metal and many other surfaces.
- Warm up the pollution with a hair dryer.
- Scrape the soft substance.
- Wet a rag or sponge with sunflower oil.
- Apply oil, wait 5 minutes, wipe with the same cloth.
- Wash with a soapy solution, then rinse.
The procedure does not require exposure to high temperatures, so a hair dryer will be as effective as its building counterpart. In the case of using the latter, you should not heat the objects strongly so as not to spoil them. Special care should be taken when removing plastic or colored products. Plastic deforms when exposed to hot air, and varnish or paint blows off. Actually, its removal is one of the main areas of use of construction hair dryers.
Wet wipes
Very minor adhesive formations are removed with ordinary wet wipes. The method is quite simple, but sometimes it takes a lot of time if you tackle large-scale pollution. All you need to do is take a wet tissue and rub the stain with it until it disappears.
Acetone and hairdryer
A combined method using a solvent and heat treatment will help to get rid of the price tag on the paper surface.
- Heat the label with a hair dryer.
- We mechanically remove contamination with a plastic card or other appropriate object.
- We wipe the remaining fragments of glue with a cotton swab dipped in acetone (there should not be a lot of liquid, otherwise the paper will get wet or traces will remain).
In the absence of a solvent, nail polish remover will be no less effective.
Melamine sponge
From a hard surface, for example, from furniture, from laminate or wood, the glue is perfectly wiped off with the help of this cleaning agent. The principle of operation can be compared with a rubber band and is as follows:
- Wet the contaminated surface with cold water.
- Rub with a sponge until the result is acceptable.
Melamine sponges are toxic (at least so the manufacturers of competing products claim), so you should avoid their contact with food products and objects with which these products may come into contact.
Detergent
Gel for dishes will help to clean adhesive stains on clothes and upholstered furniture. To achieve the desired result, it is necessary to perform the sequence of actions described below:
- Wet the problem area and apply a gel cleanser.
- Wait a couple of minutes for the label to get wet, then wipe it off.
- If you cleaned your clothes in this way, then you will have to wash them completely.
Steam cleaning
The method is suitable for moisture-resistant materials that will not be adversely affected by the temperature of boiling water.
- We put a kettle on the stove and bring it to a boil (it is ineffective to use an electric kettle).
- We bring the surface to be cleaned to the nozzle (it is important to heat it all evenly).
- After 2-3 minutes, you can remove the remnants of the sticker, and then wash everything with a soapy solution.
School eraser
It will cope with the task perfectly, if the sticker is relatively fresh and does not cover large areas. We act as follows:
- Wet the contaminated area with a damp sponge or cloth.
- We wipe with a coarse cloth, let it dry and wipe off everything that remains with an eraser.
The first time you may not be able to remove the label completely, in this case, repeat the procedure.

Lemon
An ordinary citrus fruit, available in any grocery store, will replace aggressive liquids and will be no less effective.
- Cut a piece of lemon, large enough to clean the contaminated area.
- We rub the dirt on the surface of the cut and leave it for a couple of minutes.
- We scrape off the softened accumulations, after which we wash off the remains with warm water.
In the absence of fresh lemons, an aqueous solution of powdered concentrate is suitable. You will have to wet it not with a piece of fruit, but with a napkin or sponge soaked in liquid.
Useful recommendations
When choosing a means for cleaning adhesive fragments, it is necessary to take into account the material from which contamination will be removed, and which objects are processed. Before washing off the sticker from the electronics, it is advisable to de-energize it, if it is a mobile phone, turn it off. In the course of cleaning electrical appliances, you should not abuse liquids – water, oil, and others. Using aggressive means, conduct a preliminary test on an inconspicuous area.
