Many of us use a thermos, whether you do it regularly or from time to time, but gradually the inner surface gets dirty, plaque and an unpleasant smell appear. We will tell you how to clean the thermos and make the “little helper” shine with its former cleanliness, using improvised means.
If you wash the thermos immediately after use and do not store drinks and food in it for a long time, then ordinary cleaning with a washcloth and dishwashing detergent is enough. Otherwise, you will have to fiddle, as one careless movement and the bulb can be damaged, which will spoil the object and its ability to retain temperature.

The type of pollution depends on what you fill it with. It can be tea deposits, scum from brewing herbs, or aroma from storing soup.
The inner part can be:
- Stainless Steel;
- glass flask
A thermos with a glass flask inside requires particularly careful care and cleaning, be careful with it.
We clean the tea plaque and the unpleasant smell
Lemon will save you from the smell and tea plaque! To do this, take a lemon, cut it into pieces so that it is convenient to fall asleep, fill a thermos with boiling water, leave it for 12 hours. After the time is up, drain the lemon infusion, rinse with water and enjoy a clean container with a pleasant aroma!
Similarly, lemon can be replaced with citric acid, for this you will need a couple of sachets of this powder and boiling water. This method is best suited for cleaning a glass flask, as it is the most gentle.
You can use carbonated water, for this, buy non-colored carbonated water of the “7ap” type. Heat the drink, pour it into a thermos and, without closing the lid, leave it for 10 hours. Next, rinse and assess how clean the bulb is.
We get rid of scale
It will be more difficult to deal with scale, try not to allow strong growths, as it is categorically NOT possible to use abrasive products, metal brushes, sponges, etc. for cleaning. Any scratch of the internal part leads to a decrease in thermal characteristics.
For descaling, pour two tablespoons of soda, 1/2 cup of pearl barley into the flask, fill it halfway with hot water, close it and shake it thoroughly. The groats during shaking clean the inner surface, then you need to drain the resulting composition, rinse with water.

9% vinegar will help you easily deal with any contamination of a stainless steel thermos. Pour in 150 ml of vinegar, pour boiling water to the top, cover with a lid and shake. We leave the thermos for 4 hours, then rinse with water. Lime, tea scale and odor are cleaned, and the vinegar will evaporate quickly.
Now you can continue to use the thermos for its intended purpose, it is like new!
On a note
- Do not forget to wash the flask after each use with a soft cloth using detergent, then the thermos will serve for a long time and delight you with hot aromatic drinks.
- DO NOT use bleach for cleaning as this may cause your assistant to malfunction.
- Do not use abrasive substances to clean the inside of the thermos, this reduces the thermal characteristics.
- If you do not plan to use the thermos for a while, then you do not need to close it tightly so that an unpleasant smell does not appear.
- Be sure to dry the inside well after cleaning.
