Why wash tulle?
Curtains are an integral part of home comfort. But most often you can notice that white synthetic tulle curtains (organza, kapron) quickly turn yellow or gray, lose their color freshness. This happens most often due to the impact on them of dust, sunlight, cigarette smoke and various household factors. In this case, to whiten and give them their original color, you can use specialized products bought in the store. But experienced housewives note that household chemicals do not always give the desired effect.
If you need to whiten tulle curtains literally “here and now”, then you can use folk remedies, tested even by our grandmothers. To begin with, it is necessary to determine what means can be used? Their choice is quite large and depends on what effect you are going to get. You can remove stains, refresh the color of things, and remove the yellowish tint in various ways. It is quite possible to achieve the desired goal even without the use of specialized store-bought drugs.
Folk methods of bleaching tulle curtains
What means were used before to whiten and give freshness to curtains? Let’s consider each of them in more detail:
- Boiling. Suitable only for cotton tulle curtains – this is an ideal method of bleaching for them.
- Aqueous alcohol in combination with hydrogen peroxide. Only cotton tulle can be bleached with this method. It is used in a ratio of 2:1. We add the solution to the water and place the curtains in it for half an hour. It is good to add rubbing alcohol for prevention. Then the yellow shade will not appear on the tulle in the future.
- Soda and ammonia. 7 tablespoons of soda and 3 tablespoons of ammonia (3%) are diluted in a bucket of water, the tulle is soaked for 3-4 hours. After soaking, wash as usual at a temperature of 30-40 degrees,
- Starch. It can also be used for these purposes. After washing, lower the curtains into water, add starch solution and leave for 2-3 minutes. Dry the tulle without exposure to sunlight. By adding starch, you can be sure that it will be easier to remove dirt from the fabric in subsequent washes. Starch repels dirt – and this is also one of the useful qualities in this case.
Among other things, tulle can be whitened with means based on active oxygen, for example, Vanish. But such cleaners are quite expensive and do not work much better than proven “grandmother’s” methods.

How to “refresh” the color of tulle curtains?
In order to give tulle a “second youth” and add a white glow, you can use the following means:
- Zelenka It will help whiten synthetic nylon or organza tulle. After washing at a temperature not higher than 40 degrees, when rinsing, add a solution of greens, wait 3-5 minutes and dry the fabric in the shade. - Blue. Liquid blue is used in the same way as green.
IMPORTANTLY! Remember that the proposed methods do not always work perfectly. If the fabric has darkened or changed color from long-term use or numerous washings, you will most likely not be able to bleach it.
How not to spoil the tulle fabric?
Now let’s consider what should not be done to avoid damage to synthetic tulle fabric:
- Boil and wash at a temperature above 60 degrees.
- Soak with means containing chlorine. Many have noticed that such bleaches lead to even greater yellowing of the fabric.
- Dry in the open sun. It is better to do it in the shade or at home.
- Wring the product after washing.

- Before soaking, shake the curtain from dust.
- Soak a heavily soiled fabric with the powder for 1-2 hours. For soaking, use water up to 40 degrees, otherwise the curtain may lose its shape.
- Always add a starch solution when rinsing – the curtains will stay clean longer!
- When ironing, use a slightly heated iron. Otherwise, the fabric may lose its shape and change color.
- Synthetic tulle curtains should not be ironed at all, but should be dried flat.
