Sometimes there is such a delicate problem as a repulsive smell in a bag. The reasons can be very different: the bag got caught in the rain and did not dry out, a rotten apple was lost there, there were smoked products among the products that were in it. The result is one: a strong irritating stench. There are several effective ways to get rid of an unpleasant smell in a bag in a matter of minutes.
The first thing to do is to wash the thing with powder and properly air it out. You need to wash by hand, not forgetting about the lining and everything, even the smallest compartments. Perhaps the smell is coming from there, so all locks must be unfastened, crumbs and garbage should be shaken out. It is better to clean the inside of the bag with a stiff, soapy brush: while washing away the dirt, you can also remove the smell. It is better to take an aromatic powder, and for the last rinse, use a conditioner.
Dry the bag in the fresh air, preferably in a draft. If you dry the product in the sun, it can dry out and lose its shape. But leaving it damp means getting even more musty or moldy.

The smell of mold
Mold is an annoying fungus that occurs as a result of dampness, spoilage of forgotten products or food crumbs. The appearance of mold in a bag is not such a rare phenomenon. Mold smells disgusting, and often, even after washing, the smell does not dissipate for a long time. Fortunately, there are some quick and easy ways to get rid of musty odors.
- Vinegar
If, after the bag has been washed, it is rinsed in vinegar water, the unpleasant smell of mold will evaporate. Vinegar perfectly absorbs all odors and evaporates when drying.
- Fresh mint leaves
If there is still a moldy smell after washing, fresh mint will help. It should be left for several hours, and the unpleasant smell will disappear.
- Fresh newspaper
If the musty smell does not evaporate, printing ink can help. To do this, fill the bag with fresh newspapers and leave it for several hours. It is even better to wrap the outside of the product with fresh newspapers, so the unpleasant smell will go away twice as fast.
- A bag of cinnamon
If you leave an open bag of cinnamon powder in the inside of the bag for a couple of hours, any unpleasant smell, including moldy, will go away.
Musty smell
Sometimes a strange musty “aroma” appears in the bag unexpectedly, seemingly out of nowhere, the cause of which remains a mystery. If this happened, the following methods will help:
- Sachets with aromatic herbs
You can buy it in the department of household chemicals, or you can make it yourself. You need to choose aromatic herbs: lavender, rosehip, motherwort, lemon balm, mint. They are dried, crushed and sewn into a small decorative bag with a double fabric, which can be decorated if desired. It turns out something like a decorative pillow, which is always carried with you in a secret pocket of a handbag.
- Coffee
Whole grains of fresh aromatic coffee are best suited as a flavoring agent. They can be sewn into a neat little bag, or you can just throw a few large grains at the bottom of your favorite backpack.
- Pimento
Good not only as a seasoning, but also as a natural flavoring.
- Orange peel
If you put it in a bag for several hours, then instead of an unpleasant musty smell, a fresh citrus fragrance will appear. The main thing is not to forget to throw away the peel after the expiration date, otherwise the appearance of mold cannot be avoided.
Chemical smell or poor quality material
Sometimes when buying cheap things together with a new purchase, the buyer receives an unpleasant bonus – a sharp chemical smell emitted by poor-quality material. It is difficult to get rid of it, but it is possible, the main thing here is to break the persistence of the “aroma”.
Several proven means will help in this:
- onion salad
The onion cuts off most of the smells, so it is enough to finely chop it and put it on a saucer. The saucer can be covered with gauze and placed in a bag, the thing can be closed with a fastener and left alone for one day. After removing the onion salad, the bag should be aired for several hours.
- a glass of baking soda
Soda neutralizes odors well. It can be poured into a glass and placed in a purse for a day or two. It will not be necessary to air out the item after the expiration date.
- salt gruel with water
The surface of things is coated with it on both sides and left for several hours. Then rinse well and dry.
- soda powder
In difficult cases, soda can be sprinkled over the entire inner surface, closed with a fastener and removed for two days. After this period, the soda is thoroughly shaken, and the thing is aired in an open state for another couple of days.

The smell of fish
If an intrusive fishy smell remains after buying products, the following improvised means will help:
- Vinegar with vodka
Pour an equal amount of water and vodka into one container, and mix one part of water and five parts of vinegar in another. Then the mixture is combined, a cotton pad is soaked in this solution. Wipe the entire surface of the bag, side sections, pockets, seams. After this treatment, the bag is hung open for airing for several hours. It is not recommended to clean a white bag in this way .
- Silica gel and activated carbon
Several black tablets and silica gel sachets are placed in different pockets of the bag, changing them over the course of two or three days. After this period, the fishy smell disappears.
- Manganese
Dilute a light pink solution of potassium permanganate in a glass of water and wet cotton wool. The entire lining of the product, side and inner seams, pockets are wiped with cotton wool. The wet bag is dried in the open air.
- Manganese with hydrogen peroxide
A stronger agent than just potassium permanganate. Mix 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and a few crystals of potassium permanganate in a glass of warm water. Everything is mixed. The material is wiped with a light pink solution using a cloth, without missing a single seam. The bag is left until completely dry.
- Toothpaste
It is squeezed onto a saucer, and the saucer is placed in a bag. Close with a fastener and wait several hours.
- Dry cleaner’s
Dry cleaning will help 100% even in the most difficult cases, the only drawback is the price. But sometimes it justifies the investment, as it is uncomilfo to highlight an unpleasant ambre everywhere.
What not to remove odors
- Perfume. Pungent, stinky smells like fish or cheap leather cannot be removed with perfume. Any perfume, even the most pleasant and expensive, mixed with extraneous smells, leaves a disgusting “aftertaste”, after which the unpleasantness will increase many times over.
- Chlorine. In addition to the fact that chlorine can spoil the dark fabric, it will not only not remove the “fragrance”, but will also add additional sharpness to it, which will not solve the problem at all.
An unpleasant smell in a bag is a frequent problem, sometimes annoying even after high-quality washing. It can be solved using a number of simple means that can be alternated depending on the situation. As a preventive measure, it is best to wear an aromatic sachet, and then the fresh “breath” of things will accompany you inseparably throughout the day.
