In the wardrobe of every woman there is a handbag that enjoys the special love of its owner. Unfortunately, a product that often “goes out into the world” tends to get dirty. The following tips on how to clean a leather bag at home will allow you to quickly remove dirt from your favorite accessory.
Basic rules
Taking care of the bag allows you to maintain an attractive appearance for a long time. The algorithm for cleaning a leather bag consists of several stages:
- Wipe with soapy water containing a small amount of ammonia.
- Remove the solution with a damp cloth or a soft sponge. Try to wet the skin as little as possible. Remember: she does not like moisture .
- Remove excess water with a dry cloth.
- Treat the skin with a special product to add shine. Please note: the color of the cream or impregnation must match the color of the product. A universal option in this case will be the use of a colorless cream.
If your bag is simply dusty, it is enough to clean it by wiping the surface with a cloth soaked in water, and treat the product with a professional skin care product or a handy tool – glycerin, hand cream, petroleum jelly. The emollient is applied to the leather bag in a small amount with a cotton swab.

Lining
Remove all items from the bag and turn out the lining. Treat the entire inner surface of the product with a solution of foaming powder or a soapy solution, rinse it and leave it to dry.
In that case, if it is impossible to turn out the substrate, you can clean it with the help of a cotton pad soaked in an alcohol solution.

Black and brown leather
Natural ground coffee will help clean a black or brown leather bag. Brew 1 tsp. coffee with a small amount of water so that the result is a thick mixture. Apply this composition to the skin with rubbing movements and immediately wash it off using a sponge soaked in water.
Light skin
Before cleaning a light-colored leather bag using the method described above, make sure that it will not damage the surface by treating an inconspicuous area. “Grandma’s advice” recommends using proven products that will not harm the leather and will not dye it a different color when cleaning products made of light leather, for example:
- Cow’s milk. Lightly heat fresh low-fat cow’s milk. Dip a piece of cotton wool in the liquid and wipe the surface of the leather bag.
- Milk + egg white. Beat the egg white, add a small amount of warm milk to it. Treat the skin with a cotton pad dipped in this solution.
Using cow’s milk is the most gentle way to clean white and light leather bags. Milk perfectly removes impurities from any (even varnished) skin and makes it softer.
Peculiarities of cleaning patent leather
Lacquer bags require the most careful care. The main feature of the operation of these products is that they cannot be used at temperatures below 15 and above 25 degrees.
It is recommended to clean patent leather bags using professional products. When choosing, it is important to pay attention to the fact that it is intended for patent leather. Attempting to clean patent leather with a cream for normal leather will most likely cause the handbag to tarnish and lose its appearance.

You can clean patent leather using improvised means.
- Dilute 1 tsp. of citric acid in a liter of water at room temperature and run a flannel cloth soaked in this solution over the surface of the bag.
- Onions will also help to remove dirt from the lacquer product. To do this, peel the onion, cut off a piece of onion and rub it on the surface of the bag. Onion juice does a good job of cleaning patent leather, making its surface clean and glossy.
Removal of stains
To clean the skin from a greasy stain, treat the contamination with baby powder, crushed chalk or starch, and after half an hour, remove the product from the surface of the bag. For this purpose, you can also use salt and soda, but you should be extremely careful when removing these products from the skin: to clean the product from soda or salt, soften the sponge in water and gently wet the stain with it.
Old stains on the bag can be removed with dishwashing detergent, traces of ink can be removed with a solution of soda and ammonia in a ratio of 1: 1, other types of stains can be cleaned with a solution of vinegar and water in equal proportions.
Timely care of a leather bag will help keep it in perfect condition.
