We encounter pens and stains from them everywhere, especially if you are a schoolboy, student or the mother of one of them. And a preschooler with a pen completely turns into a monkey with a grenade – anything can be drawn. An equally common problem is when the paste leaked into the pocket of a shirt or jacket. As a result, you are faced with the question of how to remove the stain from the ballpoint pen and return the thing to its former appearance. It is difficult to do this, but it is possible if you choose the right tool and be extremely careful.
It is best to buy a special stain remover for the type of fabric of your clothes or furniture. It will bring out the pen faster and safer. However, it is not always possible to purchase such a product, especially for residents of small towns, where the assortment of detergents is not very diverse.
Instead, folk remedies are used to remove stains, most of which can be found in any medicine cabinet, cosmetic bag, or kitchen. Note that they are not always safe for the fabric, so before applying, test their effect on an inconspicuous part of the item.
So, recipes tested by experienced housewives.

Cleaning pen stains consists in dissolving the ink, so it is better to put a paper towel or pour starch under the stained area, which will absorb the paste, preventing it from spreading further on the fabric.
Alcohol and alcohol
The most effective way to remove a stain from a ballpoint pen is medical alcohol and alcohol products. Alcohol enters into a chemical reaction with the ink, thereby helping to easily remove them from the fabric. At the same time, it is suitable for almost all fabrics.
Cover the pen mark with alcohol and leave it for a few minutes, then lock the thing. If the stain is placed on the furniture, soak a cotton pad in alcohol and apply it to the stain. The ink will come off, then take a new cotton pad and repeat the process until the upholstery is clean again. This is a method for a fresh stain, but you will have to tinker with dried ones:
- Rubbing alcohol will help with old stains. Dilute 1 tsp in 1 glass of water. ammonia, heat slightly in a water bath until warm. Apply the solution with a cotton pad, soak the dirty area well. After that, put the clothes on the ironing board, place wet gauze or a white napkin above and below the stain and iron it. Remains of ink will be absorbed like a blotting paper. Suitable for cotton and linen fabrics .
- The same amount of turpentine can be added to ammonia. This will enhance the cleaning effect.
- Mix ethyl alcohol and glycerin 1 to 1. Wipe the stain from the ballpoint pen with a cotton pad, changing to a clean one after contamination. Suitable for woolen products .
- Mix ethyl alcohol and vinegar in a ratio of 1 to 1. When the ink mark is removed, rinse with warm water.
- Remove the stain first with alcohol, then lighten with hydrogen peroxide (3 percent). Not suitable for colored fabrics .
- Take alcohol and acetone in equal parts and put it to warm up in a water bath. Apply the resulting effective stain remover to the stain from the pen, you can wash linen or cotton fabric in this way. Be careful, as acetone can dissolve some materials and colors.
Alcohol solutions may remain on the fabric. Do not worry. They can be easily removed with a 10% ammonia solution, simply by wiping with a cotton pad dipped in it.
Hand sanitizer and hairspray also contain alcohol, so they can be used to remove pen stains. It’s convenient when you’re out and about and wondering how to get a ballpoint pen out of your clothes quickly and now. Treat the fresh ink mark so that it dissolves, then blot with wet wipes (preferably with an alcohol content). The stain will come off, and you can easily wash off alcohol stains at home by hand or in a washing machine.
Other ways
Let’s consider how to remove a ballpoint pen from fabric, except for alcohol. There are many other folk remedies that can also help:
- Dishwashing detergent and wine vinegar. Mix 0.5 tsp. gel for dishes and 1 tbsp. white wine vinegar. Dilute the mixture in 1 liter of warm water. Soak the area with the pen stain in this solution for 30-40 minutes. Then wash as usual.
- Toothpaste. Any toothpaste will do, except gel toothpaste. Apply a small amount of the paste and rub into the cloth. After a couple of minutes, wash with laundry soap. If necessary, repeat.
- Wine vinegar and corn starch. First, wet the stain with vinegar, then rub cornstarch, diluted wine vinegar or milk into a paste. Leave the thing for 2-3 hours, then lock it.
- Milk, whey, sour milk. Pour fresh milk over the clothes and leave it overnight in the refrigerator, then wash it – the pen stain will come off easily. You can speed up the process with serum or sour milk – soak the cloth in it for several hours, then rub the dirt with a soft brush and wash it. The method is suitable for silk, wool, synthetics, artificial leather, cotton and linen.
- Lemon juice, citric acid. Sprinkle a small amount of salt on the ink paste stain and sprinkle with lemon juice. Leave for 5-10 minutes, rub gently with a brush and wash. Instead of lemon juice, you can use citric acid diluted in warm water. Do not use for white fabrics .
- Turpentine. It will help to wash away the stain from the pen made of wool or silk fabric. Wet a cotton pad in it and soak the dirt, repeat the procedure, changing the cotton pads, until the thing is cleaned. Note that turpentine has a sharp unpleasant smell.
- Oxalic acid. It is a strong stain remover, but it should be used only with rubber gloves so as not to burn the skin. Be careful, as this method can be used to remove the pen from clothes only from white linen or cotton fabric . In other cases, the thing will either be damaged or it will melt.

How to remove the pen from the skin
Solving this problem is more difficult. First, determine the type of leather: treated or untreated.
If the product is made of untreated leather (nubuck, suede, etc.), then home methods will not help, and not every professional dry cleaner will be able to help, but it will not hurt to turn to professionals if the item is dear to you. We do not recommend cleaning it yourself.
It is possible to wash off the stain from the handle from treated leather, but only if it is fresh and has not had time to soak in deeply. Otherwise, only dry cleaning and painting of the product will help.
From professional cleaning products, you can use soapy water, a special color pencil for leather, Saddle soap, or other skin care products. Use them according to the instructions. But if they did not help, you can risk resorting to the folk methods described above, but before starting, check their effect (whether they will spoil the material) on an inconspicuous area of the leather product.
How to remove the pen from the wallpaper
The following will help remove a ballpoint pen stain from paper wallpaper: hydrogen peroxide and a mixture of potassium permanganate and vinegar essence. Dissolve the potassium permanganate in the vinegar essence until it turns pink and treat the ink mark on the wallpaper with cotton wool dipped in the mixture. The paste will partially come off, leaving behind a dark stain that can be removed with hydrogen peroxide.
You can also use any of the methods described above.
It’s easier with vinyl wallpaper. They are easier to wash. It is enough to use any detergent, household soap or even wet wipes.
